Play around with some figures in this. People might be pleasantly surprised (or not!!).

We have made a right few sacrifices over the last 6 years to get our house paid off, only 2 years to go and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I suppose it depends how secure your employment is, but I've no regrets, once bitten, twice shy.

Same here, both her and I were made redundant at that time and and as such there was a substantial reset in terms of careers and salaries.  Knuckled down and worked our way up the ladder in both our professions, on paper making good money therefore however felt it made sense to make the mortgage as a priority.  Oldest starting uni in a couple of years no idea if they will be staying here or going across the water, at least with the mortgage out of the way we will have a bit of head room to support them (not carry them though) if required.

I've applied Dougals approach, have not scrimped but probably should have at times..

The kids are nearly through and as I speak I'm on the Liverpool ferry doing the last year college run with my daughter ..

Both my daughters left to live away the college life making it a £500 plus month (alone) payout for rent, one year of a crossover during those years!

So advice if kids are looking to go to college is to start saving as the rent is one thing, but the extras cost throughout the year nearly as much!

The mortgage at some point will be done, would love to have used the credit union, was in it when I started working but left few years after, anyone with them?

On reflection, I regret not buying a wee flat ( even a doer up) for my kids when they went to college in UK.
Renting in UK has got so expensive...robbed

Wrong time for me financially but that would have been perfect

So what about Estate Agents, are they all slippery?

£800-£1000 per month in Belfast
Be better of buying them a car but then miss out on the whole experience?

They have a bad reputation for a reason. Like a football agent playing 2 sides off against each other.

I think there was a time when anyone could just open up an office and be an estate agent. Maybe changed nowadays in that you have to do some sort of an exam/course?

Funny in a way that down the country years ago, you could have a one lad in the village selling houses and having a pub. Maybe even being the undertaker.

Anyboy know how much the new student accom. is in Belfast city centre? The ones beside UU.

Were they not built to take the pressure off the Holylands area?  Alhough students probably prefer the Holylands area for the craic.

I must admit, only used them once, first house was a new build so dealt with the builder.

The estate agent we used did us a great turn in finding our current family home, but I reckon in the end when selling ours fucked us over a bit...

The last second the person who was buying ours, knocked off 2 grand, this with hours of changing, wife moving to her dream house and this agent telling us the buyer wants to drop money! Both had agreed but waited to we couldn't not accept!

I said yeah straight away, then took the van back round, and stripped the house, stuff I'd said I'd leave I took, I even took the shed, dismantled it, in the van with every fitting I could take off!

Hopefully never have to deal with them again but would be coming at it with the finance to get what I need though

I don't know where they are living to be paying that!  Young lad got a great room on a Queens approved HMO for £425 and moved in this week. Highest we saw,  including the Queens residence was £600.

I have had 2 in them - 1 a couple of yeaes ago and another just started. They are a great 1st year option but not cheap - £7-8k for Sept to June. There is a good reason why they are being built on every square inch of land around York St.

The Holylands is a slum so I wouldn't let them live in it but they'll spend plenty of time there at parties.

Hearing it is turning into a bit of dump these days, lived there myself for 5 - 6 years back in the late 90s but if our ones end up in Belfast in the next few years would be pushing them towards Stranmillis.

I've news for ya, it was a dump in the 90's.

I wouldn't put a rat in it. That said student accommodation areas attract the dirt outside of campus set ups, that's in most cities btw

Lived there in the mid 00s. It was a dump then too. Great times though.
