Cowell might own the publishing rights to the Buckley version but as the songwriter Cohen will get a cut of the royalties on the sales and the performance (radio play) of all three versions. Cowell will get a cut of the performance royalties of the Buckley and X-Factor versions with the Buckley's estate the X-Factor girl getting a cut of the sales only. Financially, Cohen comes out best with ex-Velvets member, John Cale who took Cohen's original 15 verse mess and rearranged it into the version recognisable today getting nothing (apart from kudos from Cohen).
