My all-in-one internet security package is slowing my laptop to a crawl and the laptop is nearly new.  It seems to be constantly working in the background and hogging system resources.  Does anyone know of a way to speed up my machine or any free firewall/anti-virus tools that would be a bit lighter on the system?

what is it - norton security ?  i use the following free programs and i have never had a problem.(touch wood)
COMODO internet security (free program - google it for the site) and ESET NOD32 antivirus ( download via a torrent site - license doesn't expire unto over 1500 days!) - these programs are not top heavy and do not intrude on your memory.

Anyone know how to back up the Bookmark folder in Firefox

Lar Naparka

Firefox will automatically backup your bookmarks from time to time.
I assume you want to manually save them....
Open the Bookmarks tab and select Organize Bookmarks.
Now, look at the Import and Backup tab.
Select Backup. You will be prompted for a place to save the backup and the present date will be chosen by default.
[I don't know where Firefox saves the automatic backups - probably in its temp folder in program files..]
Save it where you will be able to retrieve it later. Its suffix will be .json- no need to worry about that.
When you want to restore it, go back to Bookmarks >> Organize Bookmarks >> Import and Backup again and select Restore.
Be careful here....
You will get a list of dates- all are automatic saves. Go for Choose File instead.
Browse to where you saved your manual backup and select it.
Firefox will alert you that you will lose all recent changes if you go ahead and restore it.
If that's what you want, go ahead.

Stolen rom another forum regarding spyware...

The best anti-spyware stuff i could find is from malwarebytes.org just choose the free option, shouldn't take too long to download.

Then, go to your control panel, and click on system, then click on the 'system restore' tab. Once you've done that, tick the little box that says 'turn off system restore on all drives'. like so...

http://i38.tinypic.com/2hpsxav.jpg

What that means is it won't go back to the last known configuration, that's what you want as that is where the spyware hides - meaning everytime you turn on/restart your computer or laptop, the virus loads itself again.

Once you've done that you need to go into safe mode. here's how to do it:

* click start
* and then click run
* then type in: msconfig
* then the system configuration utility box will appear
* click on the BOOT.INI tab
* then tick the box at the side of /SAFEBOOT
* click apply and then close

It will then ask you to restart, do so.

It will now launch in safe mode, a pop up will ask you if you want to stay in safe mode, click yes.

Open up the malwarebytes program that you down loaded first, it should load up with a scanning screen, select quick scan, and then click the scan button.

This will take about 45 minutes, and at the end it will ask you if you want to remove them all, obviously do. Then make sure you click the 'quarantine' tab at the top and delete them all from there.

Then all you need to do, is do the system configuration stage again but this time untick the /SAFEBOOT tick box. Click apply and close, it will ask you to restart it again.

Do so and it should be fine.

My f**king laptop grinding to a halt ere for f**k sake... I am not hapy.

Right I have avg running a scan at the minute, it has detected a trojan, but when I click on it nothing is happening, do I wait til the end or what?? I am downloading that malwarebytes as we speak, do I just run a scan and then it takes care of the problem itself or is there anything I need to do? I am so shit at computers

On my AVG, if it detects something it "heals" itself or it'll give you an option to remove it to a valut? Which is what I do, but you have to wait until the end of the scan, which takes f**king 4-5hrs on my computer!

I currently have AVG, Malwarebytes and Spybot all running... That should hopefully do it, I promise I won't try to download any more dodgy files if it does!!

Think it was some dodgy software I downloaded off torrents that caused it all...

Don't run them all at once as the conflict with one another.
Malwarebytes should get the job done.
