Thought this was an interesting graphic - each square represents approx 17K people apparently.
Kerry & Kilkenny don't do badly when you consider all the size of them.
Monaghan are incognito seemingly.

prefamine there were 400,000 in mayo.Today around 125,000.Galway,roscommon and leitrim had big populations too, the famine destroyed the west and its still not recovered.

I believe the worst hit counties were actually the north midlands. Cavan, Longford etc. Cavan had approx 250000 pre famine and now is somewhere around 60,000.

There are more people in County Derry than there are in rural Western Australia (outside of the Perth metropolitan area) and it's the size of mainland western Europe.  And we have the longest beach in Ireland....never knew that.

Yeah, each square is supposed to represent 17K people, but as the population of Leitrim is some 29K, I can only conclude that creative rounding is inherent!
