Phelim Bradys (Armagh) versus Emmets (Dungannon)

The above Gaelic match was played last Sunday on the grounds of the latter club, Springfield Park, Dungannon. From a spectator's point of view, the game was very uninteresting, this being principally due to the strong east wind blowing during the game. Being the first occasion when these teams met, it was in some quarters that the Phelims would give their more experienced opponents a clean "wipe out". Still, their playing was anything but good, there being rather much of the "soccer" element introduced. Punctually to time, the following lined out under Mr Joe Quinlivan, Armagh who acted as referee :-

Phelims – Farrell (goal), Mallon, Morris, Kane, Magee, Wilkinson, Cleary (Captain),  Kennedy, Eccles, Kenny, O'Malley, Curry, Canning, Magee, Malone, Kearney and Duffy.

Emmets – John Kelly (goal), McAliskey, Donnelly, Jones, Fred Kelly, Joe Kelly, Cassidy, B O'Neill, W Cunningham, H McGurk, McNaney, Rice (Captain), J Cunningham, Keenan, Quinn, McCauley and F O'Neill

Emmets won the toss and elected to play against the wind, immediately assuming the aggressive. Phelims brought the ball well down but Cleary muffed and play returned to midfield. Phelims again pressed and for some time were in a dangerous position until Donnelly brought relief to the Emmets by one of his long kicks. Play was now confined to the touch line and valuable time lost. From a free Phelims again pressed and were awarded a fifty yard kick; the shot for goal however failed. From the kick out Emmets who were playing a very good game kept play confined to the visitors twenty one yard line but the ball going behind relief was brought to the Phelims. Phelims again pressed and brought play to the Emmets territory where a lot of scuffling ensued which ended in the Phelims getting their first score. From the kick out play was again brought to the Phelims twenty one yard line where the Emmets were awarded one goal per McCauley and a point per Rice. Nothing further in the scoring was done until the whistle sounded for half time although Quinn (Emmets) who was as usual playing a splendid game got rather bad luck in not securing further points, his kicks from mid-field being too wide. Half time score:-  Phelims 1 point; Emmets 1 goal and 1 point
On resuming Phelims were soon on the defence and kept play to mid-field, where it could only be described as a give and take nature. At this time the wind was blowing very strong thus depriving the Emmets who had the better of the game, from several scores, the kicks for scores going, as in the first half, rather wide. Play for the last fifteen minutes was kept in the Emmets territory where the Phelims by determined play added one goal and three points thus leaving them as victors. Final score:- Phelims 1 goal 4 points (7 points); Emmets 1 goal 1 point (4 points).
