Just been told today that I have to get surgery to trim the "turbinates" in my left nostril to fix restricted breathing and overproduction of nasty stuff. Anyone ever had this done? Looked up a video of the surgery on youtube and it didn't look too bad.

Had the Turbinates and the Septum repaired at the same time 3 weeks ago. My sense of smell has improved, I snore less and the best thing of all is I can breathe through both nostrils. The surgery  took about an hour, I was home 2 hours after the surgery and felt groggy all day. The next morning the pain had decreased drastically so did not need the pain meds anymore. The worst part of the whole procedure is the splints that they put up my nose for the first week after they were removed I could breathe like I have not done since I was a kid. I would highly recommend the surgery if you suffer from nasal congestion and infections caused by septum or turbinate problems....do not You Tube the procedure if you are squeamish.

Had you suffered from the "overproduction" I was on about? My nose would fill up two or three times a day.

Glad to hear everything is ok.

The one thing that puzzles me is why would anyone want to watch the procedure?  There is nothing that YOU can do. ???

By "overproduction" do you mean a lot of "snot"? In the mornings I would be very congested this would decrease as the day wore on but I always had that feeling that I was talking through my nose all the time. My wife said that prior to the surgery my speech was becoming very muffled, since the surgery this has stopped and so has the loud snoring, I seem to be getting better nights sleep as well. The doctor did say that my nose was a mess with both nostrils obstructed by the septum. You wont believe the amount of stuff that will come out of your nose when the packing or splints are removed.

Yes!

Thing is that if I cleared it out every morning, it would block up during the day again.

Had my surgery yesterday. Limited septoplasty and trimming of inferior turbinates. Having the packs removed from my nose this morning was quite possibly one of the worst experiences of my life. Got all cleaned up eventually and was discharged. Had a nice cup of tea and a shower and was brushing my teeth before having a nap when I sneezed...

Ouch!!   You will be fine in a couple of weeks, there will be unbelievable stuff coming out of your nose for the next few weeks but after that it will be so much easier to breath. My doctor said it would take 12 weeks to fully heal.
