Did you see Tommy Conlon's piece in the Independent yesterday ? In it he says that it is Loughnane and NOT Cody who has brought special talent ot the game of hurling - he says that Loughnane's 2 AIs with Clare are far more significant than the 6 delivered by Cody simply because KK had 25 to start off with and due to the huge resources of talent available to Cody.

He says Loughnane therefore has been the better manager.

Agree ??

No. There have been plenty of managers in Kilkenny, Cork and Tipperary with lots of talent available down the years and they have not won 6 all irelands in nine years. Loughnane did wonders for hurling in general and Clare in particular by raising the bar for the counties outside the big three and for that he is to be commended however he was much too easily distracted by outside factors and lost focus costing the team in the long run. 1998 was the obvious year when Clare were the best team in the country but allowed Offally to see them off over three games. Cody would never loose focus like that.

It's a stupid contention. By his logic it would be impossible for anyone from Kilkenny, Cork or Tipperary ever to be considered a better manager than anyone from another county who has managed an All-Ireland winning team.

That's what I thought to be honest - I couldn't believe what I was reading in fact !
