championship football is all about momentum and driving on. if we can get back up on the horse in the qualifiers, we can regain some momentum. there seems to be an awful lot of negativity out there, i think its a mayo thing with our past. if we cant get over that then we will never have a chance of doing anything. the positives outway the negatives i think. OK we lost ronan mgar for a while but we have 2 or 3 coming back, we have a team of youth and experience plus we have a manager who has been there done that and seen it all before. this is his time to show what he is made of

Kevin Scahill may have kept Andy scoreless but its hardly an amazing achievement - if he could keep him scoreless and from soloing then he may be worth a look.

That comment is a bit naff Barney. Firstly, for Scahill to keep Andy scoreless is a great achievement in club championship football.

How can you keep a forward from not soloing? Scahill was extremely tight on Moran and forced him out and into the corner when Andy did manage to get possession. He did an excellent marking job. How/Why does it matter if Andy gets a solo in? He can solo all day so long as he isnt setting up play and scoring, which he wasnt doing either against Breaffy.
???

Moy I mean that Andy was not let score or set up play against Breaffy. Scahill had him in is pocket.

In that case Scahill sounds like a very good defender.

I saw this over on mayofans.com who took it from setantasports.com

Not sure what thread to put this in, but it's a strange interview with Pierce Hanley. On one hand you get the impression he's homesick and would love to be back, but on the other hand he's seems pretty determined to make it over there (well, why wouldn't he). The bit about wanting to play with Mayo when he's home in the off-season is bound to cause some debate though!  :o

Former Mayo underage sensation Pierce Hanley has vowed to make himself a permanent fixture with the Brisbane Lions, despite suffering from acute homesickness in his first few weeks at the AFL giants.

Hanley joined Laois native Colm Begley at the Lions last year and has already been earmarked by officials at the club as a potential star in the making.

However, Hanley is aware that success is not guaranteed in the AFL and admitted that the option to return home is always open to him.

Cork defender Michael Shields recently cut his losses with Carlton and is back training with the Rebels this week.

In the mean time, Hanley is hoping that he will be allowed to come home and play for Mayo in the AFL off-season, a dream he can only realise if John O'Mahony's men make the All-Ireland final on September 21.

"When I got to Brisbane I was homesick but after my parents came out for two weeks at Easter, things got easier," Hanley said in an Evening Herald interview.

"I feel like I'm coping okay now and I want to stay in the AFL to have a long career with the Lions.

"I've got nothing to lose by leaving the GAA. I can always go back if things don't work out so I can't see myself going home for a long time.

"I do miss playing Gaelic football but I can hopefully play for Mayo in the Aussie Rules off-season."

Despite all the projections of doom that have attended the establishment of an AFL scouting networks in Ireland in recent weeks, Hanley has dismissed suggestions that a mass exodus of Gaelic football talent Down Under will take place.

"I can't see dozens and dozens of GAA players coming out here because it's very tough to adapt to Aussie Rules from Gaelic football but nobody should blame anyone who wants to try," he added.

Over here in Australia, & I haven't even seen his name reported in the papers as potential, its hard to break into the AFL squads, & on that side I haven't heard any word of him progressing to play for the Lions any time soon. I wish the lad all the best making the Lions, but Mayo in 1-2 years looks likely to me, well thats based on reading the Sun Hearld here in Melbourne anyways.

A lot of the pressure on being a mayo footballer is how quick they are written off .
the two kilcullen obviousy lost the run of them selves last week but to dismiss them as haveing disipline problem is just daft. that where a good manager comes in and  make great players of ones with such flaws? they are obviously talented guys with an agression level most posters seem to think is lacking in mayo players.
and apart from a couple of  FBD games where he let no one down how exactly is colm cafferty written off so early?
age any one for alan roche ? 25? 26? probable just coming into his prime
another defender with a lot going for him is gary mullins yet another one of the disappeared. discarding players so young makes no sense defenders in particular improve with age.
If you make yourself understood, you're always speaking well. Moliere

Alan Roache played in Connacht Final 1999. That was his first year I think. Though I may be mistaken.

You re right about defenders improving with age imo.

I think you are right there. I have just done a quick check on Willie Joe’s excellent archives section and ’99 appears to be his first championship year. He was gone before the ’96 final; at least he didn’t figure in Maughan’s All Ireland panel then or in his ’97 panel either.
Gary Mullins was in the news last year after he transferred from Claremorris to Na Fianna in Dublin. There was some controversy, I recall, about him playing in the States and not having the necessary clearance from Claremorris to do so. In any event he got all or part of the resulting suspension lifted and played in the Dublin championships with Na Fianna.
His form was said to be good and Johnno and ASAIK, Jonno did ask him to join his panel in spring of last year. However, his comeback came to an end it seems after he was red carded in a Dublin championship match.

I thought Gary Mullins was playing midfield for Claremorris against Ballina last weekend.
