What about your fight to retain broadband  is it proving to be successful

Not wanting to pry into your business too much here but why would you be losing your broadband. I can safely say I would die if someone took away my internet access that was slower than 20megs.

I live in a rural area, which is too far from the local telephone exchange to get broadband. You have to be within 5 miles and I live 7 miles from it. BT was contracted by the British Government to explore ways to bring broadband to a wider population, that wouldn't normally get it. Greencastle was selected for a Fibre Optic trail to see if it would be successful. Now that BT know it's possible, they are pulling the fibre optic broadband out of Greencastle and leaving us with a 24.5k dial up internet connection.

Are you lobbying anybody about it. Access to at least 2megs is essential and from what I can gather is a goal of the Britisg Government. What sort of speed are you on at the moment?? I couldn't stomach going back to dial up.

Yeah, we've got a few people on the case. On 24.4k at the moment. Heart breaking stuff.

As for the 2megs, BT were only contracted to see if it was possible. Now that it they discovered it is, they've pulled the plug. They aren't obligated to keep it.

Zigy what about satellite broadband? At home we're too far from the exchange to get cable broadband but have satellite instead.

Getting satellite in next month. I've used Satellite broadband elsewhere for other things in the past and found it to be quite unstable, depending on the weather. Plus, been told the maximum speed we can expect is 0.5meg. Better than dial up, but not great either.

I've found it pretty reliable. Not as fast as cable broadband right enough but its in a different league to dial up.

I'll see how it goes, but for the next 4 weeks or so I'll be on the slow life.

Na the USB things are mobile broadband and will work anywhere you have get the relevant reception. Satellite broadband involved installing a satellite dish on your house.

Ok now I am going to look really stupid here, why not use one of the usb broadband things then, installing a satellite seems like a lot of effort for such a small bit of bandwidth.
