Pat Roe bows to the inevitable

Inevitable after the Westmeath game and the Down game. Pat, unfortunately wasn't a success at Offaly, and we are arguably in a worse position now than when Kevin Kilmurray left us. However at some point (like NOW for instance) the players need to stop looking for the easy way out and look at themselves. So many changes in manager with the same underlying issues around attitude tend to make you think the real problem isn't the man wearing the Bainisteoir's bib. Time for us to cop on.

The thing is, this is probably a good gig for a new manager to take on, if the players bother their holes.

QuoteOffaly Football Manager Pat Roe this morning (21st July) informed County Board Chairman Pat Teehan of his intention, in the best interest of Offaly football, not to seek a further year as manager of the Offaly Senior Football Team. Offaly County Board wish to thank Pat Roe for his commitment to the Offaly Senior Football team over the past two years.

While Kilmurray has great drive , ideas and passion, he isnt a good manager - great trainer or coach though

Disappointed in Roe, prob not entirely his fault wither. Like to see him with a better squad to see what he does. Laois next manager prob...but imo they are also on the slide...

Pat Roe didn't impress me tactically, especially against Westmeath. We were absolutely clueless about how to approach them. However, I don't blame one iota of blame on PAt Roe's doorstep for the nature of the performance against Down. If lads aren't interested, then Our Lord himself couldn't turn them into a competitive outfit.

If the players have a serious look at themselves, or failing that a new manager simply drops them all and starts from fresh, and from looking at form and application rather than simply taking in lads because they were there last year, then there is potential there, certainly potential to be far more competitive and proud than the last two performances have been.

You could tell in the league even though it was div4 that Offaly were a class above all the teams there, even Antrim despite it being a draw.

Down can't be that much better than them.

To concede 5-19 in an inter-county championship match would appear to reflect players who just weren't bothered, have they got no leaders in the team who can raise the rest of them?

There are lads like Ciaran McManus, who for all his faults will try, in fact he'll try too much because he feels he has too. Apart from him and Karol Slattery, and a couple of others, the fact that they are county footballers is enough for them, and the status that goes with it. The fact that you are actually representing a proud county doesn't seem to come into their thoughts, especially when they hit troubled waters.

A clear out at player level is needed as much as at management level. We have time now to appoint a new man to see a lot of our club football. Pick lads from that that show the right skill level and application, instead of simply calling everyone from the last printed programme of the previous year, and that would be a start.

Then anyone who is not committed should be asked to either commit, or leave.

Only then will Offaly start living up to their potential, however good or bad that may be, in the Championship.

Last Saturday is not our true level, and should not be accepted as such.
