Air Carrier Accidents Involving Known or Suspected Suicides of Crew
Members, 1982 - 1999

     
     10/31/99
     Near Nantucket Island, MA Egypt Air
     Boeing 767-366ER
     Airplane departed cruise altitude of 33,000 feet en route from
New York to Cairo at a descent rate of 24,000 feet per minute. Early
indications are that both engines were also shut off and that the
airplane pitched up momentarily before the in-flight breakup.
(Investigation is still in progress.)

     Gaborone, Botswana
     ATR-42-300
     A medically grounded pilot took off in one of the airline's
three ATR-42's and dove it into the other two company airplanes,
destroying them and killing himself.

     Boeing 737-300
     Airplane departed normal cruise flight and crashed at high rate
of speed. CVR had been deactivated before dive was initiated. Reports
indicate that Captain's career disappointments and financial stress
may have led him to commit suicide.

     Airplane entered into steep dive and crashed 10 minutes after
takeoff.  Reports indicated that pilot disconnected autopilot and
deliberately crashed, committing suicide. This was challenged by the
Moroccan Pilot's Union.

     Deadheading crew member attempted to kill flying crew and commit
