I'm personally disappointed that Pierse Hanley is heading/gone as I have never been as impressed by a young Mayo player at his age. To see by your original post that there are possibly other Mayo lads about to go doesn't exactly fill me with joy either. For a county like Laois to be loosing 3/4 players after all the work that has been put in by the various coaches must be disheartening. Good luck to these players in whatever is in store for them.

Cant say i agree witht that at all. The coaches dont have a monopoly on what a young lad does and if they are bitter to see someone go to do other things they should get out of the game. They should (and im sure they do)have pride when they see the likes of Kennely and Clarke on the big screen doing well in Oz and im sure there clubs managers down the years would be bursting with pride that they are just a little bit responsible for their achievments.

As selfless and all as most coaches are there would have to be some level of disappointment for them to have spent as much time and effort with these top young players and then to have them whipped away from their game by Aussies offering professional contracts. Most people I reckon, as I do, would wish these players well in their efforts in making it in Oz, but surely the coaches etc are entitled to feel less than delighted that their county side will suffer as a consequence of the creaming off of this talent.
Laois are a very good example as they are reportedly loosing the greatest numbers at the moment. Their coaching of young lads is the envy of most counties and deserve great credit for this. They have won 3 AI minor titles and 6 Leinsters since 1996, this years team were another excellent crop that lost the AI final. All this in a county with a population of ~60,000 and this including an area that hurling dominates. It would be great for all who have helped these players along the way to see them lift Sam for the very first time, they'd hardly be as happy if Brendan Quigley wins a title with the Brisbane Lions would they ! Don't know where I mentioned or alluded in my previous post about coaches having "a monopoly on what a young lad does".

How come that the Aussies are not targeting young Kerry players. Surely you would expect that the first port of call would be the home of football where the most naturally talented players are in abundance.  :D

Young players in Kerry are surrounded by an invisible yerra force field which convinces outsiders that prodigous young players are no use.
If you were any use you'd be playing.

Do you think that explains our lack of success at minor and U21 lately?? I've heard of Kerry cute hoorism being used as an explanation for a few things but ??? ??? ???

YES! The powerful force field can have a negative effect on the players themselves. The county board turn it off when a young lad starts training with the seniors. The cute hoors!

Quigley decides against Australian move

AFTER weeks of consideration Brendan Quigley has decided against going to Australia to resume his Australian Rules career.
Quigley had been considering a move to the Melbourne-based Carlton club but eventually decided late last week to stay in Ireland and continue his inter-county career with Laois and his club career with Timahoe.
The news will be a significant boost to Laois manager Liam Kearns who sets about re-building the Laois senior team. Quigley had been persued by Carlton since the end of the inter-county season and, although there was an issue with the Brisbane Lions over his previous involvement with them, the Australian Football League (AFL) cleared the way for Quigley to link up with Carlton, where Cork's Setanta O'hAilpin, Aisake O'hAilpin and Michael Shields are all currently based.
Quigley initially decided to turn his back on Aussie Rules about ten days ago and while Carlton did ask him to re-consider - with first-team manager Kevin Sheedy even getting involved - the case was finally closed over the weekend.

A night on the rip with Colm Parkinson who went on a tour when he was most needed might change his mind again !  Keep him in the "Skinners" in Ballyroan and regale him with storys of Paddy Peacock because as sure as eggs from a duck a young lad will change his mind.  Let the odd slap on the back be a hard one!
