Taking Clips from DVDs

I have a couple of games on DVD and I want to take some clips and make a highlight video.  Moviemaker and the other basic programs I have wont recognise the type of video that is on the dvd, is there some conversion I can do?

I'd imagine you would need to Rip the DVD to an mpeg or other video file before you can use movie maker to edit it.  I'm no expert on ripping DVD's but I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction.

DVD Decrypter and Gordian Knot should do the trick. Not as simple as it might seem and involves a bit of re-encoding.

Its not an encrypted DVD though, it just has one of our club games on it, will that Gordian Knot thingy do it?
