I see on the news last night Eugene Young was talking about the tracking system
I know we spoke about it before on a soccer thread & it is regularly used during Champions League games but does anyone have any idea what sort of distance inter-county footballers cover during a game?
Soccer players are around 8-10k metres I think
This device tracks what area of the pitch you are in during the game & the amount of metres you cover

orangeman

i think the midfielders cover about 4/5 miles

Have worn this tracking system 3-4 times, averaging 9.5km per match. they can print out your total distance travelled, total number of sprints, duration of sprints, distance covered, distance of sprints. they can also print out the pitch layout showing where you have run, with different colours for different speeds, with lighter colours showing the faster sprints.
pretty good system

Have seen some of Eugens data first hand and it is mightly impressive. The man does great things for the GAA. He showed me data from a similar project involving referees, fair play to them as they cover some ground too.

GAA needs more men like Young who can take such a Proffesional approach.

Would have to echo that about Eugene Young - a complete gentleman and a fantastic coach into the bargain. He was involved with our club back from about 1998-2001 and I think anyone associated with the club would agree they have been in decline ever since he left. I see on another thread a poster giving off about coasched turning players away, Eugene Young is an excellent example of a coach who fully involved all participants regardless of ability.

I'd love to try this out just for comparative reasons having played in a number of positions this year. But it would obviously vary depending on the opposition and the system management decide on for any given game. It'd be interesting all the same!

Just a ploy to get them Dirty Dubs tagged ;)

These types of GPS tracking devise is commonly used in aussie rules. Them boys do some running, Shane Crawford from Hawthorn does 20Km in a game.

Hardy

They should learn to 'read the game'. That was always my excuse for not running much - the Franz Beckenbauer response. (Sorry if you've heard it before).

"Franz - unusually for a great player, you're not the fastest. Many ordinary players would beat you in a sprint from A to B."
  - "That's true. But I don't usually start from A".

Pangurban

Was disgusted to see this being tested on juveniles and their coaches enthusing about how valuable an asset it would be. Its a game for gods sake, a means of relaxation, not an endurance test. Time we wised up before we lose the plot altogether

Puckoon

Pangurban, I think thats more a case of mis management by over zealous coaches. These kind of barometers shouldnt be used on kids, but its an interesting insight into the individual athletics performed during games.

NAG

I have to say I find this very gimicky.

Young is on a serious wage from the Ulster council so I would be expecting big things from him and to be honest I am seriously disappointed up to now. Being a hurling man there is yet to be one constructive idea or plan to come from these highly paid officials to develop hurling in Ulster. Now I accept that hurling is the poor relation in Ulster and Ulster council have no real interest in developing the game further but surely these guys are being paid to develop gaelic games equally something that I can say with hand on heart is def. not happening.

NAG the likes of Young are there for Games devlopment. To develop systems like this that may prove useful to people to enhance performance. This is not a vehicle for football. I am sure Eugene would be using this tracking system on Hurling players too.

To blame the UC for a lack of drive in the Hurling Department is unfair in my eyes too. They reguarly run courses regarding Hurling e.g coursed specifically for Hurling goalkeepers. They can only do so much with the interest in the Province and although I believe there is room for more effort I do believe they are trying.
