What's the benefit in half-days?
Got the reminder message on the school app there that it's a half day on Friday
The kids are getting drip fed the suggestion that they don't really have to go in..

What's the value in having a half day rather than just taking the day off?
Last day of school in June past was a half day Monday

Surely everyone's aware that it's just an inconvenience for parents to get kids lifted etc
Would it not make sense to cut the half days at Halloween, Christmas, Easter, June & have 2 full days? Or are these counting as 4 school days?

*& I see the free school meals kids are getting fed at 11am – is that supposed to keep them going until tea time

Some schools are preparing for exams after the holidays so they are teaching till the last day..

Kids get a tick before lunch and after even though they go home straight away.

But main reason so they get fed. Me and th kids us bought a couple of kids presents in our school. We had to give the presents today as we do t know if they will be in the rest of the week. We know they'll get nothing for Christmas like.

We are finishing at 2:00pm. That's a fake half day like.

Seems to be more and more prevalent with these half days thrown in!

I'm not knocking the teacher's in this, I know what a tough job it is.

I just think there needs to be more thought about the parents who are working FT when these half days occur.

I'm not knocking the teachers and appreciate the work they do. I couldn't do it.

I just think the half day needs called out as nonsense.
For many families where both parents are working, its actually more inconvenient to send kids in for a half day than to just keep them off.

I've heard the free school meals being used as a reason for the half day – I just can't understand how feeding a child a dinner at 11am correlates with sending the whole school home at 12 – why not just keep everyone in for normal school hours & feed them at the normal lunch time?
I just think it's a box ticking exercise.

It's not the teachers that take the time off, its the education authority that give schools the designated time for allocating time for...

Holidays, meetings, parent consultations, exams, training days...

The Education Authority designate the school calendar with bank & statutory holidays. Schools take 5 INSET days during term-term and 5 Training days during statutory holidays. Plus 3 optional days. Schools can start back at end of August (but no transport or school meals provision available - so should be avoided)No school meals at end of term either. Maintained schools work up to Holy Thursday, so giving 4 extra days to take elsewhere at the Schools discretion. St Patricks Day is another day off.
Half Days are optional and decided by school for the end of term and are deducted from optional day holidays.
I wouldn't be for a half day to be included in half term finishes.
