Going from Dublin to Killarney next Friday leaving at around 4.  Is it best to take M8 to Mitchelstown then cut across via Mallow or to take the M7 and risk the congestion at Adare?

I'd go Mallow myself as it was recommended by a few lads who'd do that journey on a regular basis, Adare is indeed the bottleneck.

QuoteAdare is indeed the bottleneck.

But only during morning and evening rush-hours.  That road (through Adare) is much better than the cross-country trek from Mallow.

I have a detour around Adare as well, that I use quite frequently. In fact it could bring you all the way down to Newcastlewest if you wanted it to.

You get off the main road just before the Woodlands, and skirt around the backroads and come back in on the Ballingarry turn on the other side of Adare. It works perfectly, but only use it if Adare is very busy. You'll be able to tell by the time you come to the turnoff.

Here's a couple of pictures that explain the detour.

High Level

Step 1
Off the main road, down to the T junction and Right. Watch for the second right turn. This is the only tricky bit.

Step 2
Cross the main road

Step 3
Continue

Step 4
Turn right at T junction, and brings you back onto the Main Killarney road, after Adare.

I'd go the M7, even with the risk of a bottle neck in Adare. Plus, the overall quality of the road is much, better than in Cork, so you can get up a better speed & feel safer doing it, than if you go via Cork. Be mindful of the speed traps and GATSO vans around Rathkeale though.

It's today he's travelling Beffs. He posted that last message at 2am or so, so I assume he means Friday :)

Beffs

Yeah, but he's not leaving for another 2 hours. So if he logs on, to get some last minute expert feedback before he sets off, he's sorted.  :)

Thanks for all the advice. I went by Mitchelstown in the end. Wasn't too bad but will go home via Adare
