DeV is and always will be a legend! For his 0-14 in the 1999 county final if nothing else.

Up in Belfast. Just realised I forgot my shoes!! Is there any clubs/disco bars that don't mind runners#christ any advice welcome #rentshoes

He is and always will be a showpony with little end product! He just didnt have the balls for the big day! Imagine if he was playing today with philly mcmahon staring him down, hed physically wet himself! As for #rentshoes, that just sums him up! He was interviewed in the late 00s and reckoned Tyrone & Armagh took football too serious and were too concerned with systems, training and weights! That sort of thing just wasnt for him, and now he comes out with this crap about managers!
There are alot of quality players that didnt get the opportunities he got but just got on with it!
And you know what, Im sorry i started this thread, he doesn't actually deserve discussion!!

One of his eyes would definitely be watering

As talented a forward as we have produced, but just couldn't thrive in the Ulster Championship once Tyrone and Armagh introduced the blanket defense. Didn't like the trash talking and pulling and dragging. His frustration culminated in him getting six months for shoving Joe McQuillan after getting the Ryan McCloskey treatment for an hour. He would have been a star in the 2012 team had he been ten years younger, with his speed, accuracy and getting on the end of passes in those fast breaks. It's a fair point about the teams he played on though. Others, including McGuinness himself, have said the same about those sides. No one's fault: Harte and Kernan were ahead of the curve and had some fantastic players. 1998 was the one that got away though as far as he was concerned.

Such nonsense. Devenney enjoyed acres of space and one to one battles compared to today's game where he'd have been double marked.

The fact that he was a big time Charlie who enjoyed the social scene too much was typical of a Donegal team that promised plenty but never delivered.
It was all the managers fault tho! 🙄

Bullshit. He is on the record from back then, on a number of occasions, talking about the enjoyment he used to get playing non-Ulster teams in the championship, when there was a bit of space and a lot less of the dirtier side of football to deal with. He used to get hammered on this board for "whining" about it.
And yeah, the last two or three seasons he'd have been double marked all right, but he'd have made hay in that 2012 side and the football they played that year.

I felt sorry for him sometimes. I think at one stage he marked mcnulty, ricey and mccloskey in about a month. i think that was the time he got sent off.

Him and sweeney were a great double act.

Still shouldn't be blaming managers.

If he was from Dublin you'd ridicule him for saying the same. The great players deal with it and thrive.

He wasn't a great player

That's fair.

Like I said, as far as talent goes, he was one of the best we've produced. But he was a confidence player and didn't do it enough on the big day when it mattered. Every now and then he would e.g. Kildare in the qualifiers in '01, a few games against Cavan, the quarter finals against Galway in '03, but not enough in the bigger games to be rated with Adrian Sweeney or Tony Boyle or Colm McFadden, never mind Murphy.

Il Bomber Destro

Sweeney was an outstanding footballer and one of the best forwards in the country round his time. He nearly beat Dublin on his own in an AI QF one year.

He was still togging out for his club last year. Wonder did he play this year for dungloe?

They were on their day a great pairing though.

He was too hot and cold to be considered great but was very talented. Possibly frustrated as one of these guys you think was very good but could have been better too.

haranguerer

For most of his career, McFadden would have been seen as similar, albeit not as good as Devenney. The difference now is that McFadden was still there in 2012, and Devenney wasn't. He was a very good player, and had he still being round, would have won an AI under McGuinness.

Could he have dragged Donegal to one himself if he had, as is suggested, had a good look in the mirror and sorted his own -commitment out? I think thats beyond the realms of possibility. So management did have a massive role to play...

rodney trotter

Devenney is 39 according to his Wiki page, so doubtful he would have been there in 2012 at 36.

His bird is as fit as fcuk. Seems to be a good bit younger than him to.
