And after a near death experience! You might stand a chance of justifying blowing the savings after 2/3 days of excess.

People's behaviour can be very odd in emergency situations. I remember hearing that in the Kings Cross fire back in the 80s lots of people cued up at the ticket barriers rather than jump them and that this directly led to an increased death toll. There was also a toilet attendant who perished waiting for the cubicles to empty. People's 'roles' have a great influence on their behaviour and it can be very difficult to adjust behaviour accordingly.

There are many cases like that. Our HSE people in work always show an old video to new starts about behaviour in the event of a fire. There are many documented cases of people standing around to watch fires unfold instead of taking themselves out of harms way i.e. Bradford etc. It also seems to be a behavioural quirk that people instinctively evacuate using the door they came in, as the go into autopilot, even if there is a safer and quicker means of egress via an emergency exit.

Anyone worrying about bags in this situation should get a box in the mouth.

Box in the mouth too good for them. As muppet said it's not about being able to carry them it's the implications for emergency equipment, other people's safety in a cramped environment.  If there is an emergency situation you do what your told by people trained in the best way to evacuate everyone, not just yourself and your duty free!
