It's an odd one. For no two situations are exactly the same, there can't be a one size fits all solution.

I've been involved in Ballyholland long enough to see us going from a club that senior players leave under a cloud, to a club that senior players want to join. It's never easy in either direction.

There is a world of difference between a player whose family are born and bred club diehards, and a player whose family are "blow ins".  If the former leaves it has potential to open a seam in a club.

There is a world of difference between a player who is part of a dedicated if underachieving junior / intermediate panel, and a player who is part of a set up where nobody trains, and they have to scrape together a team every Friday night. For the latter player, moving on is the only choice... even if the diehards can't see this.

There is a world of difference between a player who has been coached and managed by his club throughout his career, and one who has only enjoyed that support from his school.

While not quite a world of difference, there is something to be said for someone who is aiming for the top with their transfer, and someone who is leaving for a small step up.

Anyhow, judge each case on its merits. But if a player genuinely wants to leave your club, i reckon don't waste your time trying to stop him. Put your efforts into stopping the situation arising again.

Dunno how I missed this thread. The Kerry model makes sure no one needs to transfer because everyone from junior c to senior has a chance of playing for Kerry if they are good enough. Off the top of my head...Kerry All Ireland winning captains who were/are junior club players (ok they may played in a divisional team but still junior club players). Jimmy Deenihan, Pat Spillane, Ogie Moran, Dara Ó Cinnéide, Páidí Ó Sé, Declan O'Sullivan....and others....the system works lads

Fair play Nihilist. I was talking about AI winning captains and I know Darran Sullivan is one...but you're right if you go into the realm of junior players ending up as high profile nationally recognised GAA stars winning All Irelands for Kerry it's astounding.

Funny one - I heard recently that one of the players on the list is looking for a club transfer. (within Kerry)
Have heard the rumour from a couple of Kerry folk so it seems to be doing the rounds - will be interesting to see if it turns out to be accurate. Can anyone remember the last time a Kerry senior intercounty player transferred?
So while the system might be pretty good, I wouldn't be holding it up as 100% perfect.

Skryne are probably the most notorious for taking players from smaller clubs round our way. Curragha losing John McDermot is the most famous case but there have been others, Mark Battersby did the same a few years ago but he's had a few injuries and never got on to the county senior squad.

That said Curragha have had a brilliant year winning a handful of trophies so hopefully they're on to something big. Hopefully with a steady bit of success they can hold on to their talent in future.
