Westmeath won all around them at U16 before the CB foisted Tommy Carr on all of us. Players, clubs or supporters didn't want him. By some stroke of luck, i.e. not through any great masterplan, we had the same man in charge as that group came up through the age groups and they were working well together. Similar to the underage structure that Dublin have so successfully implemented where the same manager will take the development squad from U12 up to U18. We're our own worst enemy.
no point in Westmeath teams being too successful, give all the other mediocre counties a chance.

In fairness, maybe Carr is a good skills coach. Management and Coaching would be different.

It's no like Wstmeath were too hot at minor before he got there. Carr gets turfed in with Maughan for us but he was a damn sight better a manager.

Maughan managed mayo teams to three all Ireland finals albeit not winning any of them. He also won a munster title with Clare so his management skills have been well proven. He's not a magician capable of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear however......

John the Maughan, with all his wisdom, took a top 10 team and made them inferior to Sligo. The work of a true legend of the game. He hasn't stopped sniping at us and we won't stop sniping at him.

If a Rossie called the lifeblood of Mayo football 'paying customers' don't lie and say you'd feel any differently. The one thing Roscommon and Mayo share is an almost rabid passion for football. What Maughan did was to insult the very identity of a county and as a Mayo man he would have been an idiot to have not known better.

Thanks For the kind words Sy
I used to be indecisive but now I'm not too sure.

Hard to please Westmeath though, couldn't wait to get rid of Pat Flanagan who got them promoted to Division 1, to be replaced by Bealin who lost every game  in the Division. They create their own problems

Didn't mean to be dismissive of Sligo. I'm sure Mayo and Galway lads look at us like that and it's a maddening viewpoint when you're on the receiving end.

In 2005 we were cominf off a great run in the qualifiers and an AIQF against Kerry in 2003 and made the Connacht final in 2004 and lost a close enough game to Dublin in Croker in R4. With a lad called Tommy Carr as manager, not exactly this board's idea of great management. My point was that Maughan had plenty to work with but he could only manage to get the car going in reverse.

THANK f**k!

Westmeath football manager Tom Cribbin has revealed that Tom Carr will not be involved with the county under-21 side at all.

Cribbin had asked the former Dublin All-Ireland winner to look after the under-21 squad until the New Year when the Kildare native would be more familiar with the senior squad.

However, a number of club delegates were concerned over Carr's role with the under-21s as they feel he has underachieved during his time as manager of the county minors.

And now, Cribbin has confirmed to the Westmeath Independent that Carr will not be involved at all with the squad and that he would be taking full charge of the senior and under-21 squads.

Cribbin has added Gary Connaughton and Pierce Corroon as his senior selectors, while Michael Ennis, David Martin, Frank Mescall and Graham O'Connor will work with the under-21 squad.

The former Offaly manager stated: "There was no agenda. I felt Tom Carr's experience with the minors would help until January, allowing me to get a firm grasp on the senior team.

"Tom Carr never wanted to be under-21 manager and was only going to help in a busy period. I am very happy with the under-21 backroom team, they're all of high calibre."

That looks a decent setup with the U21s now, pity they didn't give them their own manager instead of having Cribbin double jobbing. Still, sighs of relief all round.

Who can stop Westmeath now ?? :o

We are usually first in line, now that some deadwood has been removed there is room for the other 31 counties.
