If it wasn't religion caused them it would probably be something else... Human nature to be honest.

Hardy

Where has the idea come from that the Nazis were atheist?

"We demand freedom of religion for all religious denominations within the state so long as they do not endanger its existence or oppose the moral senses of the Germanic race. The Party as such advocates the standpoint of a positive Christianity without binding itself confessionally to any one denomination."
- From Point 24 of the National Socialist German Workers' Party 25-point plan:

"To do justice to God and our own conscience, we have turned once more to the German Volk."
- Adolf Hitler, 1933.

And, in case there was any doubt about their attitude to atheists:
"We were convinced that the people need and require this faith. We have therefore undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few rhetorical declarations; we have stamped it out."
- Adolf Hitler, 1933
