I'm fascinated by the Apple/Ryanair promotion model. All their advertising is free.

Ryanair do it by planting outrageous stories in the media and abusing their customers to goad them into phone-ins and letters to the editor - presumably on the basis that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Apple do it by cultivating a Scientology-like cult that above all reaches deep into the media. How else can you get people to queue for five days for a phone? And then pay €800 for it? That's so crazy I have to say it again. €800 for a phone?!!! (A phone that will be half the price as soon as the "early adopters" - marketing code for patsies/cult victims - have all paid up.)

How do I get into this racket?

Apple don't discount, that's the price "sim free". Most re-sellers are not allowed to offer discounts either but the Mobile operators are allowed offer deals. They do offer cheaper handsets too.

I wouldn't read to much into the queues, a few hipsters and nerds is nothing compared to the gobsh1tes in this country queuing to spend 800 for Garth Brooks tickets  ;)

How about this idea?

Found a sporting organisation. Get your participants to compete for free. Get the media to dedicate pages and pages per day to your sports. Get volunteers to run it, built facilities and to find new recruits. Charge advertisers a fortune to be seen associating with your association. Then charge high fees to each one-off match (at least a phone or watch is re-usable). Watch as people desperate for tickets pay over a grand on the black market, only to throw it away later on the day.

Easy.  :D

You left out the bit about reinvesting all this in facilities and benefits for clubs and players.
