Broadband usage question

I've been keeping an eye on my broadband usage because I have a limit per month. Up until 27 Dec I had used about 23/24 GB, then suddenly within a day my usage had doubled.

I've no idea how this could be. I haven't done anything different within the last couple of days out of the ordinary. Maybe watched about an hour or so of videos, and general browsing/twitter/email etc. The only thing I can think I did differently was I downloaded an App for a radio station, and listened back to a previous show (maybe for 1.5 hours).

But I can't figure out how I could have used the same in about one day than I had only used all month of December. What would use up 23/24 GB in a day? Surely not that?!

Had a simillar thing happen with me. Useage went up from 2-3 GB to 100GB, bt charged me for going over the limit. I am on an average speed of 1- 2MB. No virus on my computer. Argued  black and blue with bt that there is something wrong with there system but got nowhere. They still took the £31 and then a couple of days later I got a call to see if I wanted to upgrade my package because of my usage. It would put u to the mental.

Your internet provider has a record of your usage over a monthly period, each day, hour, minute of your net activity. Your internet activity is monitored and recorded in a log. You can request that log from your IP, just the same as requesting a log of your phone activity. They're not inclined to offer to do this because it means work for somebody, but you can insist.

I have a 140gb limit but I can see each days  total activity and an overall graph of activity each month. I haven't had to question their account of my usage, but if I had to, it would be quite a straight forward task to identify the day and time of day that there was a suspicious peak and request an investigation into the log account.

So...

It turns out that I, along with many others apparently, were overcharged for Broadband usage in December. £21.20 to be exact. More than what I'm paying per month! Got an email from BT saying their was a problem with their broadband usage monitor thingy, and customers usage was significantly more than they had actually used.

Oh it's great to be with BT!!

I am with BT infinity - awesome service no complaints, my home has two laptops - work and personal, 3 kindles, two ipods along with iplayer etc all run with no issues, plus you get BT Sport free if you are into the soccer!

Does keeping the Kindle WIFI switched on not eat up the battery life?
I usually keep mine switched off except when I want to download a batch of books.

Got an email from BT, something similar there the other day, I'd exceeded my limit and they wanted an extra £5. I'm not saying their wrong, but can I get them to block my broadband once it reaches the limit rather than occur the additional charge?

Is it just me, or is BT Broadband generally absolutely shite at the minute? Keeps on cutting out & is v slow when it is working.

Gaffer

I m on bt infinity with an allowance if 40 something???

Got email  from them to say I was approaching my limit for the month. .  I was on 28

I assumed that everyone got a warning email when they approached their allowance thereby avoiding nasty surprises come bill time.

Log into the hub and change the channel you are on. It's currently set to pick one at random and if you choose a different one should work fine.

If its a BT Home Hub do this:

1. Go here -  http://bthomehub.home/
2. Go to Settings (and login with details on the hub sticker)
3. Go to Wireless and under channel selection select a new channel and save
