Deiseach - happy with DJ ?

Kilkenny legend DJ Carey has allowed his name to go forward for the vacant Waterford job.

By John Fogarty

The Irish Examiner understands the 42-year-old will be nominated for the position at tonight's county board meeting.

Carey faces opposition in the form of outgoing manager Michael Ryan, former selector under Davy Fitzgerald Paraic Fanning and De La Salle's Derek McGrath.

They are all likely to be supported for the role at the meeting.

Providing they are still interested, they will then be interviewed by the selection committee over the coming weeks.

That six-man group is made up by chairman Tom Cunningham, secretary Timmy O'Keeffe, vice-chairman John O'Leary, treasurer Joe Cleary and former players James Murray and Stephen Frampton.

Bloody hell, that's a lightweight group of candidates. What experience has DJ got? I said two years ago that we should have gone for Jason Ryan. Yes, he's no experience managing inter-county hurling teams but he knows how to manage in general. A lot of people sneered at that, which is fair enough, but in what way is it any battier than someone with little/no experience of management at all? I suppose with DJ you wouldn't have the players get all haughty about his lack of success. Derek McGrath's stock has gone down since De La Salle were beaten in the county championship, but he still seems the best bet from that lot (NB I was pissed off with the way Michael Ryan was treated, but I don't think we can go back to him after everything that's happened.)

Pauric Fanning says he's not interested, and DJ doesn't know where the speculation is coming from. So it looks like we have two candidates, one of whom is the outgoing manager *sigh*

Is there any definite list of who is in for the job? I'd have thought Peter Queally and Kevin Ryan would have been suitable candidates if they were interested.

I don't know of any official list. Kevin Ryan looks to be out of the frame though.

Its just pure media speculation at this stage, I'd ignore all that, sure one day its Donal O'g Cusack, then next day its DJ Carey, the next day it'll be Daithi Regan.  ;D

I'm not sure Daithi's frankness of expression would suit a changing room, ala Di Canio.

Not sure DJ is what Waterford need, not if they want to progress at any rate. Waterford might suit DJ rightly though.

DJ Carey shouldn't even be considered let alone given the job, what experience has he in coaching/managing at any level? Farcical situation really.

Hasn't DJ said that it's all news to him ? Hard to know the truth anymore.

He confirmed yesterday he is not going for the job. He was asked but is not interested at the moment due to business commitments. They said on local radio the 3 nominations were Peter Queally, Michael Ryan and Derek McGrath. I presume other people can be approached by the committee as well.

Michael Ryan confirmed on local radio today he is not going to look for the job so down to 2 names now as it stands!

DJ is doing a book signing in the hurling heartlands of Craigavon and Ballymena this Saturday if anyone is interested.
