If there had been GAAboard in 1997, what would people have said about Armagh's prospects?

There was a GAA board in 1997! Then I was the sole Armagh poster, constantly beating the drum for our beloved county in the face of much ridicule, particularly from the Meath Dublin direction.Little did they know in a mere 5 years time, all my predictions would come true!

So you were predicting Armagh to win Sam in '02 as far back as 1997?

T Fearon

I was saying we are a top county, underachieving at that team,1997.

I remember vividly my first dalliance with this Board and the Internet itself,on March 18 1997,the day after Cross won their first All Ireland.Very few left from those heady days,on the Board now.

People in 1997 probably didn't believe that Cross' were going to win a few more either.

What was the board called initially? The url gaaboard doesn't seem to exist before 2001.

I am continuously amazed at the absolute tripe talked by Armagh people that you don't have the players. Such nonsense! Armagh have as good a player as any county. You just have a habit of appointing managers who can't pull them together.
McNulty of Laois, McGeeney, O'Rourke of Louth would all do a good job for Armagh. They would get you back challenging for provincial honours and would have the respect of the players. The last two managers have made Armagh a laughing stock.
I'd have to agree with this post, although I would say that we should have been rebuilding from 08 or 09, the time in between has been wasted. John Mc (I know it was Tony with Cross) or someone of that vintage or indeed a combination needs to be appointed and given time to develop the squad. Once again Tony Fearon seems to dismiss by implication the contribution of his fellow 'Pass resident Barney Canavan and Brian McAlinden made to that '02 team.Personally I would love to see John Rafferty given a role with the likes of Tony or John Mc or all three. But also given time to sort out the issues. I know the ACB is working behind the scenes and many former players are working away at development squads but the fans need to see a little more on the senior county front. Beating Letrim and Wicklow in the championship is a backward step from the performances even of last year substandard as they were.

Back in 1997 there were signs that things were slowly improving, i'm not so sure we can say the same now. Back then there was a bit of intensity and aggression in the team, and niaivity and inexperience cost us badly a few times but that was something that could be worked on. This year, i think it would have been more encouraging if we'd exited after a few solid, if unspectacular performances, against half decent opposition. When we came up against two reasonably well organised teams we flopped badly - hard to take many positives from that.  There is a flakiness about this team that makes it hard to see how anything constructive can be built over the next few years.
That's just, like your opinion man.

Apples, I did not infer anything about the two Brians (one of whom I know particularly well, and who has just had a bereavement) and have always been of the opinion that they did the spadework for 2002. They have never been given credit for the vast improvment made after the shambles they inherited in 1995.

My inference made in 1997 was that the county had been underachieving for years (it was then 15 years since the last Ulster title win) and I was certainly not attributing this in any way to the two Brians, who at that stage had only one Ulster campaign under their belts.

Ok no problem Tony, who is dead belonging to Barney Canavan?

Obviously glad they are ok first and foremost, but losing Morgan for the champ is a blow.

I'm sure that's just a coincidence Tony.
