It's amazing how perception changes with perspective. In listening to McHugh on Highland for years, he has always appeared extremely realistic and probably overly critical and harsh in his judgements of the Donegal team. And he is right  here - it is 30.years since we beat Monaghan. We have lost our last four meetings. Of course, that doesnt mean much, or shouldnt, for this game.

On the other hand, I've heard him say numerous times that Armagh traditionally fear us (post 99 excepted!). What was this based on? Yes we beat then in 90 and 93, but Armagh put us out of the championship probably five times in the 80s!!

His hatred of anything remotely got to do with Derry means that he isn't a particularly popular boy round these parts!!

According to our colleagues here, he also hates Tyrone, Down, Armagh etc etc.

Might have a soft spot for Cavan though.

There was a debate on the radio yesterday about the big hits that teams were putting in now.


One pundit was saying how he noticed ( and it looked like he was hinting at Donegal ) how some teams were punching boys in the guts to slow them down, knowing exactly what they were doing and that it looked like a tactic almost.



He immediately took the bait and said that that was rich coming from a Meath man !

He managed Cavan when last won Ulster in 97, he would have a bit of a soft spot for us I suppose. Spends a bit of time down in Cavan. But has the odd dig now and again too, on the radio/papers..
