Anyone recommend a good laptop? Don't really know much about which is a good make or anything so would appreciate help from anyone in the know.

Mostly gonna be used for browsing internet, watching dvds and downloading music, films etc.
In around the £400 mark or less if at all possible.

Was looking at these two, any opinions on Sony or Toshiba as models?

Folks i recently damaged my laptop and put it through the house insurance as it was covered, the insurance company have agreed to replace the laptop (which is a good thing). however, the company acting on their behalf (be valued) have offered me the following laptop as a replacement. I done a few checks on-line there and found this laptop to be at the bottom end of the market and if some of you guys out there who are into this sort of thing could you advise me if this laptop is ok or indeed as i suspect "bare basic laptop".

P.S. they have to match like for like but my laptop is 5 year old and no matter what they offer me it will be better than what i had but should i still accept any piece of sh1t

Its a decent enough spec since your old one was 5 yrs old it will def be an improvement. However, I am typing this on a HP laptop which is the worst piece of shit I ever bought. Screen flickers, mouse pad jumps all over the place. The HP laptops are gone to the dogs. I suggest you ask for a different brand if possible. Try Acer, not a household name but they make really well spec'd gear for cheaper. I am also fairly sure that if you pick something else they will give you the value of the suggested laptop against the cost of the one you'd really like. You should then check that out.

That's a pretty decent laptop and the HDMIs will be handy. A definite few steps up from a five year old one. Unlike Myles though I've never owned one but they're on our 'approved suppliers' list at work and seem to have a good reputation. I've had a few HP tablet PCs and they've been sound enough.

Would agree with both Ulick and Myles. That one they're offering is a decent spec so no worries on that front. HP supply the kit in our place too and it seems to do the job. I bought a cheap Acer laptop for under 400 around Christmas and it seems the ticket so far.

Any recommendations for a laptop and wireless printer in around the £550 mark? It will be used for the usual browsing and word processing purposes. It will also be used for school (the person using it is a primary school teacher), photos, dvds and it needs to have a big screen.

Is there anything decent within that budget?
