Just watched A Year 'Till Sunday.  Was this received well in Ireland.  What did you think of this film?

It has plenty if tough edges but it was the first successful attempt by filmmakers here at covering a year in the life of a team. It was just blind luck that they happened to be that year's All-Ireland champions - Galway hadn't won the title in decades before that. There's a documentary on Westmeath's 2004 season out there too (it's as much about their Kerry manager Paudi O'Se) that was similar to A Year 'Till Sunday called Marooned, if anything it's better because Paudi was a huge character.

Very well received by fans of the game as it appeared to give a real behind the scenes insight. However one year of a substitute goalkeeper's fly on the wall condensed down to 75 minutes left most of us wanting a lot more.

Hard to know what non-supporters of Gaelic games felt about it but it was nominated for a few awards and won a couple as far as I know:

Winner Best Documentary Award, 2000 Celtic Film & Television Festival. Winner Golden Shot Award, 1999 International Sports Film Festival, Portoro. Nominee for Best Documentary Category, 1999 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards

Thanks for all your help with this.  Does anyone know if a documentary has ever been done on Football/Hurling?

There was a recent high-profile transfer Stokeman.
Quite a big reaction to it.
Google 'Seanie Johnston' or just ask Mylestheslasher to tell you what it was all about.

Mylestheslasher already said all he intends on that issue as posted above. However, if Stokeman wants to know how some GAA teams cheat their way to a medal Jinxy would be a great place to start a discussion on a biography of Joe Sheridan.

Hardy

Hey! Put up on this "cheat" allegation.

A year till Sunday is far superior to Marooned.
If you were any use you'd be playing.

I think you need to watch A Year 'Till Sunday again. It shows that it hadn't much of a budget and a lot of the framing of scenes is poorer than Marooned. Some of the interviews in Marooned - like the old farmer who follows Westmeath religiously and could hardly fathom winning Leinster - are without parallel in terms of effectiveness in A Tear 'Till Sunday.

Both could certainly be improved on. though, and it's a pity that we haven't really got any in-depth looks at the life of a county team since then. Last year's look back at Donegal did some nice things with its cinematography but it was hampered by Jimmy's restrictions and just about no behind the scenes stuff.

There were a couple of other interesting doumentaries broadcast a few years ago. There was one lookin at the 94 Down team...can't remember the name of it. Just remember DJ roaring "Losers win nathin!!!".

Another on Mullaghbawn winnin the Ulster championship (1995??) Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but did Benny Tierney end up in Cross Rangers club drinking pints???

More recently you had Rí na Ríochta about Darragh Ó Sé and Galvinised about Paul Galvin.

The Dublin documentary in 2005 was pretty good I thought.

The only transfers such as this in the past ~7 years are Sean Johnston and Brendan Murphy. Murphy subsequently returned to his native county after 2 (?) years

That was Tommy Walsh. Played with Wicklow for 2 years and then went back to Carlow
There has been plenty of other transfers too
