I have an iPhone just over a year, but I've noticed the button is started to stick. From what I've heard, the button tends to give up after a while, rendering the phone basically useless.

But I'd heard something about a Button App you can download, which you use instead of the main iPhone button. Anyone know anything about this?

Home button, or power button?

The phone isnt useless if the home button breaks - the wife's phone has this issue and she uses a touch screen home button which does the trick:

Settings - General - Accessibility - Physical and Motor - AssistiveTouch.

Mind you at over £400 a throw for the previous version you'd think they could sort it out
Careful now

Puckoon, it's the home button, the circular one. Can't find that option. Mines an iPhone 4.

Puckoon

Very weird, mine is an iPhone 4 also and I'm looking at it right now.

Don't mean to ask the stupid question, but you did scroll down the General page after settings to the bottom? Thats where the accessibility tab is. Then in the accessibility tab the Physical and Motor grouping is at the bottom of that tab, so you'd want to scroll down there also.

I've just checked apple forums and they are suggesting you need at least the IOS5 software update (I believe we are on version 6 now).

I've powered through five iOS devices by now and none have had broken home screen buttons. I got a refurb back on iPod touch I sent in for a battery replacement before its warranty ran out and the home screen button needs you to be a tad more forceful with it but beyond that I've found them to be very robust. I'm sure plenty of repair services offer very affordable prices to fix the button anyways.

Ah yes, I haven't got around to updating to ios5. Any videos for that?

If you're a heavy Maps user you really should think before you make that jump, unless you're in a big city the navigation on Aplle's replacement for Google's maps is woeful in Ireland (and much of the rest of the world, honestly). To update you can go to Settings or plug it into iTunes and the options it should be on the landing page for your iPhone in itunes

Sure there is a google maps app made by google now in the app store, that is better than the google maps app that apple bundled.

Good point, I'd forgotten about that. It's important to know that you'll need to do that leg-work to have decent maps again when you update to iOS6 or else mishaps are sure to happen.

Cheers Puck.  I've been using my old iphone as an itouch for the last 6 months and the home button went 5 months ago. It's been a real torture to use... until this morning.  Thanks :)

Trying to update my iPhone 4 to the iOS 6. I have apps, music, photos, contacts etc on my phone, but can't seem to back them up to iTunes. I don't want to proceed with the update until I have backed up everything, but it's not letting me.

Can anyone help?

Puckoon

Home button on my own phone is now getting quite temperamental. While the touch screen button is an option, my patience is running out and I am not sure how long I can tolerate having to use it. Serious pain in the arse, apple.
