Heard a marriage counselling group on the radio recently saying that too much time on the phone/laptop is now one of the most common causes of marital difficulties.

Pfft. It was soap operas or sport before. Most modern people could cope without the internet, but why would you want to?
Heard some auld fortune teller on radio 1 giving predictions for 2013 back in september- said that the net would go down for a few days in ireland and the country would be up shit creek...

Heard another discussion on it one night and they were blaming the smart phone and internet for increase in affairs among people eg easier to track down Ex's, easier to meet strangers out of sight etc etc.

She probably meant a few choppy rapids in contrast to the black cave at the moment!

The Iceman

There is definitely a problem amoung younger generations and I worry for my kids (4,3 and 7 months. I purposely don't let them near the phones and we don't have tablets/iPADs.
We give them limited access to one lap top and no video games. They love the outdoors, love digigng holes and climbing trees and building forts and whatever is going on in their make believe worlds.
I was spending serious time on apps a while back and then deleted them all. I would recommend getting a house phone. Relying on mobiles makes it too easy an excuse to have about all the time. If anyone needs to get hold of you they can, you dont need immediate access to the internet and you can actually interact with the people in your life and not just yourself
I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight

Too much time in front of screens makes kids cranky and grumpy in my experience.
So some TV or video games or whatever is okay but not for long stretches.
Everything in moderation, mods.

I had one of them smartphone thingys for about a week, hated the fecking thing and I ended up switching out of it for a cheaper model that lets me text ( I send about 20 a month and receive a couple of hundred)

Our girls bought the wife one of them kindle things and she is forever reading books on there, she is always on the phone texting back and forth with her sister who lives in Brighton, it amazes me how much time she has started to spend with technology.

I read a ton, I like the feel of the paper, the kindle is fine but I am old school and wouldnt give a shite if they took my cellphone away, i simply wouldnt miss it.

The internet I would miss just because it is a great way to keep in touch with friends and such, it is also great for gaelic games and I would struggle if I didnt know what was going on with the Harps and the county team.
Armagh, the one true love of a mans life.

My 67 year old mother said that, I ignored her and went ahead and bought her a kindle anyway and she loves it. She has never owned a laptop or anything like that, not very technologically minded either and she asked me to put some books on it. After putting some on it she then asked me again when am I going to do it, I told her it was already done. Don't lie you wee bastard I have it here in my hands. I told her it was done over wi-fi and she was amazed, was like a 5 year old at a magic show.

Is a big problem for me Bingo. I have found now that I can't watch a film on tv wighout grabbing the phone every 10 mins. Does the wife's head in. I actually think it is now a compulsion as I get agitated if it is out in the kitchen or upstairs. Pre smartphone I was always checking teletext and the last thing I did every night was check 301 (Sport), 1615 (NI News) and 101 (Main News) in that order  :-\

Jesus lad, you have issues. Are you serious about the film thing? I love a good film and the last thing I would want would be the ipad or iphone near me.

People really are getting too worried about what is going on outside their lives and not worried enough about their own/families lives.

Unfortunately this will only get worse as the younger generation are heads down all the time. :-\

We bought my 82 year old Dad and IPad last year for his birthday. Three of us live in the U.S so he gets to Skype us nearly every day plus he gets to see his two grandchildren that are aged 4 and 18 months. The interaction between my 18 month old and my 82 year old dad is priceless, the smile on his face when he sees her has to be seen to be believed.
For immigrants such as myself technology has made the whole immigration experience easier. I remember going home one time in the mid 90's and I had no idea what was going on in the country, I was so out of touch that I felt like I was loosing my connection with Ireland, that's no longer the case thanks to the internet.

I like keeping a tight eye on your posts on the Liverpool thread.
