the two oldest ones (9 and 7) have been droping hints about getting i-pads for christmas. the fukn things are near 400 quid! whats the alternatives there has to be something that does the same thing only more affordable. i was thinking of a couple of 2nd hand laptops off e-bay. you can get them fairly reasonable refurbished and cleaned. i dont want to sound cheap but things are tight i'm going to need oil etc. any ideas?

Nexus 7 is supposed to be decent and whilst not an ipad you could by 2 for the price of an iPad.

I had a go on the Nexus 7 yesterday - for children of that age it makes sense to get it, considering the cost.

FFS, a 9 year old and 7 year old with an iPad? And your talking about one each. God be with the days when a football is all we got at Christmas.
If I was going to buy it for them I'd only buy one and let them share. Then figure out what you want them to use it for, Internet, Movies, reading books, games? There are alternatives out there for each and the Nexus seems like a good all in one option. Knidle have a Book, Movie and Internet usable machine that is under 200 also.
I'm guessing part of the iPad attraction is Apple so in this case Google has just as much a cool factor so overall Nexus is probable the way to go at 200 smackers.

I got 3 of my kids wee android tablets off Amazon.
I cant remember the exact make or model but they had 7" capacitive screens, 8Gb storage, WiFi enabled and the latest Android OS.
I think they were £75 each. IMO, perfect for a kid....

The Nexus 7 8Gb is £159, while the 16Gb is £199.

With the release of the 32Gb, expect these prices to fall over the next few weeks.

The Nexus doesn't have an SD slot for increasing memory, but you can connect a card reader to the micro USB slot (with an adapter) to do that.
