There should be no more experimentation from here on.With the Cross players back , from next week on Grimley needs to be fielding his strongest side and developing a game plan.

naka

Awful first half
Decent second
Lavery helped as did donaghy
We had no gameplan though until donaghy went on 11.

Good summary AFS.Anyone else think Malachy Mackin was discarded far too early? I suppose after his hat trick tonight we'll also lose Gavin Mc Parland to Linfield as well.

Agree with you about Mackin, T.  I still can't believe he was dropped from the panel. We need a player like him.

First half was absolutely brutal. Full back line was ripped to shreds & as others have mentioned, sweeper didn't work at all. Midfield was also struggling very badly. Wexford have 3-4 very good forwards & to be honest they were taking our rookies to the cleaners. That said the defence was under the cosh, losing mid-field & the ball coming straight back after it was going into the forwards didn't help. AT half time, there certainly was a mood of doom & gloom.

All that said, credit where credit is due, the lads performed brilliantly in the second half & if they hadn't kicked so many wides, should have actually won. Grimley made 3-4 very good substitutions which had a massive impact on the game. Mc Parlands goals were worth the entrance fee, & Mc Keever was fantastic.

That said, I would worry about a lack of pace & physical strength in the side, particularly around midfield upwards. There seems to be no pattern to our forward play. I would love to see someone like oisin mc conville taken on board to construct an attacking unit.

Once we get the likes of Hanratty, Vernon, A Kernan, J Clarke etc back into the side, we'll not be in too bad a shape... Certainly enough to give Cavan a run for their money.

Theres going to be a lot of nights like this, the young lads are learning and are going to make mistakes... give them a chance!!

Keep the faith

Disgusting first half effort, as bad and maybe worse than that St. Mary's game a couple of years ago. Looked like a bunch of lads that'd just rolled out of bed half an hour before the throw up so sluggish and flat footed were things. The third quarter wasn't a lot better. Only really started to play in the last fifteen minutes. The comeback, spirited as it was, should not be allowed to paper over the numerous concerns.

There's so little cohesion when going forward that it's embarrassing. Time and time again moves break down with boys either running into traffic or firing horrendous passes in the vague direction of the opposition goal - the foot passing tonight was dire. It doesn't help when no one in your starting FF line can win their own ball; Stefan Forker was dynamite in the McKenna Cup but his confidence looks shot at the minute.

The sweeper system deployed in the first half was useless. In fact, it was worse than useless giving Ben Brosnan space to run the show and allowing Wexford a spare man to float short kick outs to at will.

Paul Grimley's jig routine on the line is beginning to become a bit worrying. Someone less concerned with dancing about and getting on at the linesman would've had a boy stripped and ready to go once it was confirmed that a substitute was needed for Kieran Toner. Instead, it wasn't until Toner had begun hopping off the field that a sub was asked to start taking their tracksuit off. This gave the very grateful Wexford keeper another opportunity to waste valuable seconds, and eventually left us a man down for a passage of play. All this would've been poor stuff at any stage in a game, but with less than a couple of minutes on the clock and still a score down it was criminal. These are the small things that cost games when things are tight, if the boss isn't reacting quickly enough then someone else on the backroom team needs to pipe up.

On a positive note, the spirit shown to work back into the match was very commendable. If only we could play with the drive and confidence of those last fifteen minutes a bit more frequently. McParland's goals were terrific, two super top corner finishes from play and a well taken pressure penalty. McKeever did his bit. Dyas and Lavery especially made positive contributions when introduced. And it's good to have Donaghy back.

Oh, and the ref was a tube.

Hey, I thought you said you werent going to paper over the cracks! Maybe Wexford took the foot off the pedal, thinking they had the game won, and not wanted any more yeller cards.

Wexford were wasting time at the very start of the second half, a sure sign that they hadn't the confidence to finish the job despite a commanding lead.
