Well done to all those involved in helping the young Fermanagh player out in California.  Its heartening to see he is recovering well after a life threatening incident.

But can the Association realistically finance the much lauded initiative of providing insurance to 500 or so players from Ireland each year who opt to play in the United States?

The last thing we need is for beleaguered clubs to be paying for this new scheme.  Its a potentially worry for those clubs (most!) who are finding it tough at present.

Seeing as they can't cover the total cost of an ACL reconstruction from diagnosis to full recovery in Northern Ireland I fail to see how they would fare out for paying medical bills in America which are much much higher!

The plan is to provide insurance to cover medical bills, not to cover the full bills themselves. Same as paying car insurance premiums instead of being faced with the full cost of repairs.

No it's different from car insurance. For example they will only pay up to €4,500 per injury and do not cover the first £100! Now having just done my cruiciate for the 2nd time I can tell you that between physio, surgeon, MRI scan, X-Ray's and the operation there is quite a big shortfall. Along with that there are ongoing problems which I may need another operation for and this is not covered as I have already gone over my limit.

McGovern's medical expenses are thought to be well over $1m . . . even though he is entitled to loss of income and hospital benefit (Only up to 15 days) that is a drop in the ocean.

Don't get me wrong it is great that there is some cover in place for people heading out but the whole system is not good enough in its current form and the people and clubs who were fiddling the previous system have a lot to answer for in my opinion!!

That's the injury scheme here screen. I think what Eamonn is saying is that the GAA are looking at providing insurance in the States, rather than compensating or paying for treatment as they do here.
