Does anyone use it, recommend it, seems like a face book for professionals just another site to put details on you can never get off.

CiKe

Yes, but probably only useful in event you are actively looking to change jobs - is useful to locate contacts for jobs/industries you might be interested in - friends of friends etc who you can tap up for info/tips. You may also be contacted by headhunters who have jobs which fit your profile.

Seems to only really be useful for people with a few years experience. If you're a recent graduate there is a lot of talk here in Spain about a start-up called Tyba which is targeting graduate recruitment - they supposedly just rejected a take-over offer in the region of $20mn (3-4  22 yr olds)

With 18 years experience in the IT industry surely you would have researched this before now? Certainly your IT colleagues would be better placed to answer than a GAA discussion forum.

I know of a person that was contacted by a recruiter on linked in last week and asked if they would be interested in going for a certain role in a company.
I knew that linked in was the place where companies advertise job, but headhunting is obv now part of that.

I have no interest in facebook, or any social media, I stay well clear of them because once your details go up they are very hard to remove, hence I thought the usefulness of another social media site for professionals could be best answered by the good folk on here who seem to use social media, ok ballbag!

For someone who claims to have a 18 year career in IT you consistently show complete lack of any understanding and have views which appear to be have taken from scaremonger media articles in the Daily Mail/Sun. What details are you so afraid of not being able to remove? After initial registration for these services it's up to you how much you want to share and its very easy to remove the accounts.

I don't understand how anyone working in the IT industry cannot not have an interest in social media or actively use it. It's a great way to keep up with the latest trends and ideas. If a customer requires some solutioning architecture  ::) from yourself on a social media type project, do you tell them you have no interest in it???

I can't remember the last person I came across in IT without a LinkedIn profile. If i do not know a person i'm interviewing or are not personally recommended, it's the first thing I check.

It's IT, if by some chance it was a woman, I'd prefer to live in hope.

Linkedin is a great tool. You can use it for professional networking with your clients and prospects. Get recommendations from colleagues and clients and use these to show to your potential clients.
Recruiters use it a lot also to find talent and with the right profile you will be contacted regularly.
If you are in a sales role or prospecting role, Linkedin is a great way to research who works where and what their role is - it will often have emails and numbers too.
Couldn't recommend it highly enough.
I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight

The Subbie

I'm on it and use it mainly as a tool to stay in touch with ex colleagues from the different projects I have worked on in the past. Construction is a transient industry and you loose touch with a lot of good people that you have worked with in the past, some because they are dickheads that you don't want to stay in touch with, others because thats what happens in the industry.

Linkedin is good for maintaining that contact with the decent people that you've worked with before and also keeping the bush telegraph open, I know a lot of people that have gotten jobs through it from people they worked with before.

It's gone ridiculous lately though with the amount of "cold calling" from recruitment co's on it, asking me to send them my CV's and that they want to talk to me as they are interested in my career, fcuk off yis are only interested in your % commission, these dicks i usually ignore.

You must work In an IT department of 4, the vast majority of IT professionals I work with wouldn't use social media.  I wouldn't offer a solution using social media, that wouldn't be my field.  If you are keeping up with the latest trends in IT on social media you must be a hell of catch for any employer!

Linkedin has it's uses but fast becomes a spam vehicle for recruiters.

If you're a contractor or the like it's great.

Unless you're an employer or a sales type person not sure of the value of it.

It's IT, if by some chance it was a woman, I'd prefer to live in hope.
I know a lady that works in HR and she checks candidates social media profiles and has unearthed some cracking bits of info in the past -lads openly displaying a pechant for drugs etc - not what the prospective employer wanted to hear as the job in question was a sales rep job and involved a lot of driving.
People can be idiots on what they put up on the internet and often dont even secure private access only to this info.
