Could anyone recommend me a decent but well-priced bike I could buy?  don't want something too dear, I'm thinking of doing a bit of cycling but don't want to buy something really good if I don't take to it all that well.

Decathalon only do their own brand of bikes i think

Got myself a Trek 1.1 recently from Caldwell's in Omagh for £425 (cheapest I could find online was £550)
If you qualify for the cycle scheme, its cheap as chips (nearly)

Cheap bikes are false economy. You'll end up with something heavy and you'll be out on the roads getting constantly overtaken by people on real bikes, you'll get pissed off with it and you'll be more likely to give up. Invest the money from the beginning on something higher end but second hand, the worst that can happen is you'll sell it at a slight loss.

There's an old woman in Palo Alto who rides around on one of them.  I saw her coming up to a red light in the middle of town one day and I didn't see any sign of her getting down off it.  I was wondering what she was going to do and .... she just came to a halt and leaned her hand against a tree at the side of the road. No bother to her.
