GAA v Rugby

This is not a rugby bashing thread. We all support Ireland and were disappointed with the decision ( but more so the performance ) on Saturday and cheer on Leinster/Munster/Ulster in the Hein Cup.

However there is a problem with Gaa coverage compared to Rugby. There were around 9 hours of rugby on RTE (exc TG4) this weekend compared to a poorly cobbled together hour of GAA.

Now we all enjoyed watching Italy put one over on the French but surely more should be done to promote our national game than 20 mins football and 20 mins Hurling. RTE always have a leaning towards the oval ball and isn't Ryle excitable Nugent head of RTE sport but surely more coverage should be given to GAA.

People may argue it's only the league but there are great skills/scores on offer every week ( supposedly an amazing score by Murphy v Meath for Donegal) and these should be showcased for the younger generation who the GAA are competing with rugby/soccer for.
If it means the GAA  accepting less money for the next TV deal based upon highlights( being shown of at least all Div 1/2 games in hurling and football (why should there not be 2 shows, BBC have different shows for (Premiership and football league) would this not be a good move for the GAA?

The powers that be need to do more to promote our games whether this is RTE, TV3,BBC or starting their own digital channel.

While I agree with the general proposition, your theory discounts the two games on TG4 and two games on Setanta and the fact that there are only 5 rugby international weekends in the year. Perhaps digital TV will facilitate more slots for GAA highlights at least.

I think it was discussed before. An OG by the GAA by selling the rights of football to satellite broadcasters. Finance over future.

I agree about getting max coverage by not using niche broadcasters. However Setanta have bought most of the Dublin games, Setanta Ireland is on the basic UPC cable package so most of the 1 million Jackeens can see these without difficulty.

You are not comparing like with like. The 6 Nations is Rugby's biggest tournament while ours is the Championship. . . on any given weekend in the summer you could easily have 9 hours of coverage between RTE & TV3 including Hurling and Football.

I don't see it as a problem really and let Rugby have their time at the minute. When the long evenings set in we will have our fun.

Agreed. Too much coverage of it in the media in general (especially papers) for my own personal liking but to be fair this is their time of year.

As RTE is based in D4 and is mainly run and staffed by D4 types I'm surprised they even allow what a lot of them refers to disdainfully as "Bogball 2 and "Stickball 2 on their Station at all.

This is true, but in fairness to RTÉ and the broadsheet newspapers rugby is popular among the demographic whose wallets they want to capture. Blanket coverage of the Leinster Schools Cup may look daft to our eyes, but the advertising rates are probably eye-watering

Me too, Christ imagine if they managed to beat Wales and were on target for a triple crown... Lord Jaysus this week would be worse than it is already.

Personally i couldnt give a fook how ireland get on., this 6 nations and  H cup bore the  hole of me
Gaa shoot themselves in the foot continuously.
The crowds are low because the GAA dont promote the games and allow the attitude that 'sure its only the league' to persist.
