no harm in assessing players fitness levels - if done correctly
then giving them a programme each to work on between now and the start of club training in 2011

Fitness testing be it aerobic anaerobic or strength training is very important i feel to let the player and coach no the level there at. Some very good sites on this area of training -  totalgaacoach.com   is the latest one iv seen and looks to have all the areas that should be tested in there articles

Larry doesn't do press-ups. Larry pushes the earth down.
Mayo for Sam! Just don't ask me for a year

Did a fitness test last year with a team I trained. 5 different tests. Beep test, 30m sprint, 1 press up every 3 seconds till stop, agility run sprint which includes 3 sharp turns over short distance and jump test, basically how high up on a wall can you make a mark with a piece of chalk. Then repeated later in year to see if lads were progressing.
Much prefer beep test (or multi stage shuttle run) to standard run because the increasing speed in the beep test is much more demanding. It also stops lads being cute and running very slow to allow them run farther.
Found this a very good site...http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/
