I bought a book called the Atlas of Irish history recently and there's a map of Ireland in the 12th century with the names of the main tribes by area.

And it is amazing that 800 years later there are fellas from the same families playing hurling and football for the same areas.

Kerry -O Suilleabhain-   Mickey Ned
Clare   O Lochlainn-     Sparrow
Tipp    Ui Cearbhall -    John
Offaly  Ua Conchubair-  Matt
Wexford Ua Gormain     Larry
Tyrone Ua Neill             Stephen

I find all that fascinating too. Then again are people who chastise us for not having anglos playing our national sport, where in fact its riddled with enlish, scotch and welsh names too.

It is also pleasing to see more european names coming through too.

Well, yes, actually Tony's brother played for Armagh. I'd have O'Hanlons as the name associated with Armagh, though their territory covered half on Louth too.

Cavan - Reilly
Fermanagh - Maguire
Down - Magennis
Sligo - O'Connor
Donegal - O'Donnell, O'Doherty
Clare - O'Brien
Offaly - O'Connor
Cork - Barry, Roche

Can't think of any Reilly that ever played for Cavan.

Cavan played in ten All-Ireland finals (not including drawn games and the 1925 game which was declared void).  None of those teams took the field without an O'Reilly. Five teams had three O'Reillys on them.

I came across a poem written in 1652 on the Cromwellian expulsion to Connacht . It was written by a priest from Down called Feardorcha o Meallain and I was wondering if he would have been an ancestor of the AMallon from Down of this parish.
