Reclaiming Emergency Tax in the South?

Help needed, folks.

Took a job on very short notice at the beginning of October - the first month of which was spent training abroad. As I'd never previously worked in the south I had no PPS number. On my return at the start of November this took a few weeks to process until I finally received it last week and was able to apply for my tax credits. Massive chunks of tax were deducted from my October and November paychecks in the interim as emergency tax.

On taking the job HR had advised me that I would be able to reclaim my emergency tax once I got the details sorted. However, Payroll has just imformed me that the tax certificate they've received for me from the Revenue does not include a refund for October and November.

I've tried to get set up using the PAYE anytime system, but An Post have currently suspended deliveries to my area due to the weather.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation? Am I, in fact, entitled to my tax back? If so, how the hell do I go about reclaiming it? Do I just have to constantly ring them up and find someone willing to listen to me?

The Revenue will only issue what are called Week 1 certs towards the end of the tax year, this is most likely what you have been issued with.; You will get a P60 at the year end which now that you are registered with PAYE anytime, you will be able to submit your pay and tax online. You will then  (online)  request a P21 balance statement, any tax due will then be repaid to you.

Thanks. The P60 process would leave me waiting until February for the refund. I got in touch with the Revenue and explained the situation to them - they updated my tax credit certificate there and then and sent it on to payroll for me.

Did they not have to get IMF permission for this?

If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

the revenue is by far the best dept in the government to deal with. Sent an email about two months ago on a monday and had my refund cheque on the thursday. I am in the same position now worked oct and nov on emergency tax and hoping my refund will be in my December pay but if not ill just get it next year.

They're unbelievably efficient compared to some other government departments down here and apparently always have been. Been made clear to me that I can definitely get it back in the New  Year but would prefer to have it in time for Christmas!
