Record your own song

Does anyone know how you would go about recording a song from home.  Surely nowadays with all the technology available it should be fairly simple.

I havnae a clue how to do it, but I would imagine that if you have a backing track/karaoke track and a microphone plugged into your computer you could record it by using some online program.

Can any techies help?

If you have a mac use garageband, otherwise download http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. Look up tutorials on how to use them on the net.
