Over the past few weeks, clubs across the country will have been meeting up for the first time as a collective group to plan what to do in the season ahead. I was just wondering what sort of things go on at these meetings in other clubs - is it usually the manager telling the team what the schedule is? Do many clubs reflect on the previous years performance? Is the any group activities - such as identifying weaknesses? Strengths? etc and feeding back to the management. Do teams set specfic goals/targets for the year as a group or as individuals? Do clubs even have a meeting before training starts? I've been to alot of these sort of meetings over the years and sat bored listening to managers tell us what we are going to do and i think its quite important that the correct tone is set early on.
That was never a square ball!!

club beside us have been training away this last 3 weeks and they are only a junior club, first meeting was the 1st week of the new year and then the training started 8th january - them boys won't stick that

Benny we had ours 2 weeks ago but haven't started training yet, the schedule for the first 8 weeks of pre-season training were explained and a few words on respect etc but a very quick chat that lasted 5 mins. No need to stand telling players what you're gonna do and what you're not gonna do and how you're gonna do it, at the end of the day you can give the players the best of everything and if they don't put the effort in and back the management team then you're going no where fast...

Think it also depends on the management, ie if it is a new manager/management team then there may be some added points such as background, introductions, manager ambitions, their style of play etc. If you have the same management as a previous year then I reckon it would have more focus on the squad and what they feel is necessary to better themselves.

Team meeting a few years ago at our club, returning manager:
"Right lads, we had a middlin' year last year. Did ok in the league, bate in the semi-final of the championship.
But just two players in front of the disciplinary commitee. How the f**k would you expect to win anything with an attitude like that?"

Sounds like the dedication you need to have to win a county championship. Watch that space

Is it just me or do some of the lesser clubs (i.e. junior) always start back training a lot earlier?

i think its more to do with the backward thinking mentality...

the more we do, the earlier we get back and harder the session

the better we'll be

when in fact lads get pissed off being ran around, pick up injuries, come championship there fatigued the season is long enough for club footballers an average of 9 months...the later you the back the hungrier ,the sharper and less chance of injuries the players become
will to win is important the will to prepare to win is vital

Depends on a lot of things, our senior footballers don't train till August.

If you have aspirations as a Junior club then training early is not a bad thing, depending on the draw (usually made around now) some teams maybe need to prepare for that match and that may work out best for them.

I prefer to have one nights training session and games at the weekend as pre-season. you can't beat games, players should get themselves fit if they are serious then they will

thats it.....players lose interest

Paddy Clarke the well known coach used to be involved with my club and he maintained that players lose interest after 2 weeks if they don't play games within that period.

I don't believe in bringing players back for the sake of bringing them back and put them through senseless running in order to boost the managers pocket in some cases thats what I'm against

Junior clubs and lowly Intermediate clubs generally have to start earlier in my opinion because the majority of players in these teams wouldn't have the same commitment to a close season personal fitness/weights programme as a player from a Senior club would. Thus they would be better off doing three collective sessions a week with their team.
