I have dislocated my shoulder recently for the 2nd time in 6months.  My physio has said I will probably require surgery.

Does anyone know who the best shoulder  surgeons would be in round the Dublin area??

i recently broke my shoulder and had Maurice Nelligan, He didnt have to operate but i hear he is one of the best orthapedics in the country.
He is a consultant in VHI Dundrum and i think Tallaght hospital.
My shoulder isd like new now but a lot od physio needed. One of the worst joints to injure.

have popped my shoulder many times, not good. but went to the specialist in Belfast years ago, works out of the Musgrave Hospital. after a couple of discussion with him i decided not to get the operation.

as i was nearing my playing time he said not to bother as the operation would cause a lot of discomfort, I'd be out of work for a while (i consider it ;)) but the main reason was that the operation was never always going to be a success!!!! basically I'd lose a certain amount of mobility in the shoulder and it could be restrictive.

so 7 years later I'm still playing away and touch wood I've been grand, i know come the days when the arthritis kicks in it will be sore but i am hope they will have drugs for that :D

None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

Was kinda in the same boat miltown. Have popped both shoulders now a combined 11 times. Thankfully it's at the stage now were it goes back in pretty easy. The first few times it happened me were the worst (spent many an hr sitting around Omagh A&E waiting for someone to get it back in!!) Again at the age I'm at now there's no point in going for the operation. Tho there's a lot you can do when your fully fit with regards to weights to help prevent it going again.

yes i think your right with building up the muscle around your shoulder.

but its an odd injury in that even the slightest movement can pop it. you can bench press a massive weight do 100 press ups but then go for a ball get a shove in the back your arm shunts forward and springs back and hey presto your on your way to the Royal to get it back in again!!!

as you have said it can go back in now easy enough, but after about 2/3 hours your in agony!!!

Popped mines twice, with about a 4 year gap inbetween, had another two small dilocation also in that period and put it in myself. Had Surg about 3 years ago now, your shoulder is certainly tighter, which is the point of the op, in a sling for 4-6 weeks, 6 months physio, its a small price to pay if you want to be fetching the high ball. To be honest once its out more than 2 times its gonna come out again if you dont have surgury.

Anyone I know who has had the surg done properly its been very effective. If your first dislocation was in your teens there is a 85% of another dislocation later if there is no surg. I know in the states all teens (atheltes, private care) get surg on there first dislocation.

I couldnt reccommend it more, but the physio is a long enough road to get back full/95%+ rotation.

Had mine done in Musgrave, Dr Craig.

You can build up the muscle with low weights high reps, stuff like pulls ups, dips etc are very valuable. But your only building the muscle around it up, the Rot cuff is still expanded and will find it easier to come out.

With regards preventing dislocation bench press isn't important trying to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles I have been told is most important. There are several exercises which will help strengthen these muscles which can be performed using dumbells. With regards surgery stick to the rehab and don't rush back too early.

yip getting the rotator cuff strenghthen is the main priorty. As Maxiums says there are a few dumbell and cable excerises that can help in that side of it.
