The only joint managers I can recall were the managers of Armagh before Big Joe.  Has it ever worked even at club level?  I ask this as yes, Cavan are going to attempt it.

Andrews set for Breffni return

Val Andrews and Terry Hyland
24 August 2010

Val Andrews is poised to make a shock return as Cavan football manager.

At last night's management committee meeting, the names of Andrews and Terry Hyland were proposed as joint managers of the team. A full county board meeting will be held this Thursday night in the Hotel Kilmore when clubs are expected to ratify the pair's appointment.

Ballymun Kickhams clubman Andrews previously managed Cavan from 1999 to 2001. But despite guiding them to an Ulster final appearance in the latter year, he didn't get unanimous approval to continue from the clubs and decided to step down.

Since then, he has managed Louth for two years - 2004 and '05 - and has been heavily involved with his club. He was in charge of this year's Dublin minor football team which lost to Kildare following four epic games in the Leinster championship.

Hyland, who led the Cavan under 21 and junior sides to provincial final appearances this year, served as a selector with Andrews during his previous time involved with the county.

While Hyland had been mentioned as a possible successor to Tommy Carr, Andrews' return to the hotseat comes as a major surprise. Fellow Dubliner Paul Caffrey and Pete McGrath were others who were linked with the vacancy.

Cavan tried it with Marty McIlkennon and Cassidy for a season. Didn't work.

Undeterred, we tried it for a season with Donal Keogan being "minded" by Paul Grimley until Philly got wind of the fact that Paul was sniffing around for the Armagh job and asked Paul to back one horse. Unsurprisingly Paul headed for the exits.

We reverted to a more traditional role with Tommy Carr for two less than successful years before opting for a third time lucky dream ticket of Andrews/Hyland.

I may be open to correction on some of the above as I'm nearly beyond caring.

Remember it being tried once in Soccer with Steve Staunton and Bobby Robson.

Conclusion to date: Doesn't work

Players need one person to listen to, two managers will have different views and personalities. cant work. but for years the Cork and Kerry teams had one manager and selectors that picked the team!!! is that the same?

players get confused very easily, poor things ;)
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

As Butters said in Southpark, Andrews is the pimp and Hyland is his bottom bitch.

Mayo had Moran and Morrison for a year - got to AIF, but lost and were quickly gotten rid of by the county board.

I was sorry to see Andrews leave in the first place,id have infinetely more confidence in this backroom team than i di when Carr was appointed.

Promotion to Division 2
stay there
Ulster Final appearance
Try and get into the last 12 in the All Ireland(like we did against Mayo in Dr Hyde under McElkennon)more than once.
win a qualifier away from home!!!!

They should be the goals within the next 3 years.
Andrews/Hyland are more than capable of delivering on those.

Art McCrory and Eugene McKenna had two moderately successful stints as Tyrone joint managers. Managed an All Ireland Final in 1995, Ulster finals 1994- 1996 (winning 2) and then an Ulster title (2001) and a National League in 2002 during their second stint. I'm pretty sure they were joint managers, although I (in my youth) always got the impression Art was the senior partner.

BHM there is no harm in setting ambitious targets and that's what they are, based on the gutless championship performances of the last two years we are, whether we like it or not, in the bottom six in the country. Our club scene is poor enough, our County board is broke and, despite the best efforts of several people, we just cannot seem to make a real breakthrough at underage level. I hope to god your confidence in the new team is justified. Joint teams don't work in any form of human endeavour in my opinion, not unless it is absolutely clear what their roles are and where the buck stops. If I was asked three years ago whether Val Andrews was a more shite GAA manager than Tommy Carr, I'm not sure I could have answered definitively.

But......we're making a small bit of progress at underage level, we have some top class colleges players that can be harnessed, maybe a few more lads can be persuaded to committ to the panel. It would not take an awful lot to register significant progress, when you consider we are starting from nearly rock bottom........

I just think we need a manager, to go in - strip all the shite away, and jsut get us back to being fit, motivated and competitive.

I know Hyland will bring the passion, not sure on VA at all to be honest. I was told the last time he was here he dismantled and rebuilding the 97 team. Is that not what we need now?

There are plenty of management team's that work as a team. I think this time around, Cavan just wanted to be seen to be giving a local man some power.

Ross Carr/DJ Kane...
Gerard Houllier/Roy Evans..

I dont think a 'joint managers' is really a great idea. It always goes the way of one of the them has to be the dominent one, calling the shots really, Ross, and the other one takes a back seat, just be's a glorified selector/motivater/coach, like DJ did with Down. In some cases the partnership goes so one sided, the lesser one will even be squeezed out altogether, and people will say finally, it should have been that way at the start anyway!

Have to agree with Breffini Yank on this one.
A joint Manager is definitely not what Cavan need at this stage!

joint managers dont work.
there will prob be an odd exception to this but having been in this situation as a player and manager, imo it just doesnt work.

Farandeelin - Moran was main man with morrison
