According to the documentary last night, the attack was a botched attempt to plant a bomb in their van. It may have been that the tactic was to detonate this bomb over the border thus accomlishing two aims.

1) Insinuate to the Loyalists/Unionists that these bands were actually running explosives for the IRA, and this one went off on them
2) Damaging in the REpublic wherever the bomb went off.

That was the aim of the attack for sure, they took great joy at shooting Fran O'Toole in the face too as he was well renowned for his good looks at the time.
Was a terrible atrocity.

.  The British forces should not be in Ireland, plain and simple and although I don't think they will advance the goal of a united Ireland I will not condem them just like I wouldn't condem those shooting British and US soldiers in Iraq.

I was particularly shocked at the time this happened and have wondered ever since if any of the people who did it gave anything like a rational reason (in their minds) for targetting the band - Can anyone shed any light on their "rational "besides the old Taig/Prod sectarianism?

That was enough justification for many people.
