there is a great TV show called Intervention  - if you ever wanted to be put off any hard drugs then its worth watching.  This is only a fraction of the people addicted to drugs but is a good example of what can happen when the drugs take over and the addiction/disease kicks in.

The majority of addicts may have shitty lives but in fairness they are often victims of abuse or messed up childhoods or some kind of tragedy .  Granted these people choose to respond by taking drugs but as a society we enable a lot of it and do little to help.
