before you do anything go and see a pro- ask about cheap entry point- what type of clubs he'd recommend etc. Golf clubs are like clothes- you need something that fits you. If you've never played and aren't a savant then the odds are you'll need something forgiving a nice and easy to hit.

Above all remember its something that you're taking up because you want to - and the point of the game is to enjoy it, although that'll not be the first thing that comes to mind when you shank one 20 yards hard left off the tee when you thought you were knocking it 350 yards straight down the middle...

I cant get used to using my left hand at the top of the club, i just hit the ball with my right hand at the top of the club like the way i would hold a hurl. There is some skill involved in that sport.

I'm the same I use the same grip, its called the Sewsunker grip or in Ireland the "Hurley Grip".
Makes no odds to me though,I'm quite comfortable with this grip.

Been thinking of starting to play golf, as when I'm home pretty much everyone I know is out playing it and I never get to see anyone anymore.

I've always liked the idea of strolling off round a course for a day and getting away from it all.

Anyone have any recommendations as to equipment/ clubs needed for beginners, and what brands a beginner should look for.

I want to keep it inexpensive as there's no point me spending a fortune until I've decided if it's definitely for me.

If I was you I'd stay away from Beginner Golf club sets and get yourself Game Improvement or Super Game Improvement Irons.
If you don't want to spend a fortune you can go custom made clubs from America, companies like www.gigagolf.com or www.pinemeadowgolf.com will build you a set of irons to your specs for under €200.

These are not knockoff clubs but clones, some people turn their noses up at these type of clubs but I done a little bit of research last year and these two companies are very legit.

I have a set of Ping G10's and I bought my Dad a set of irons from gigagolf called P2's which are based on the Ping G10's,No joking the clubs I bought for my Dad are as good as my Pings,I see very little difference in the performance and build quality between the Pings and the P2's

If I was you I'd get a set like these for €200 and after a few years upgrade to a "name" brand manufacturer if you so wish.

Beginner sets are not well made and are made of poor materials and will not be easy hit,you as a beginner need maximum forgiveness,so I would defiantly go down the line of Game Improvement or Super Game Improvement irons,so stay away from Blade type irons, look for something with a wide sole.

Apart from that the main thing is to enjoy yourself,Golf is without a doubt the greatest game I have played,it becomes a addiction, well it has for me anyway.
