There is prob a thread for this but im lazy and its Monday.
Anyway, laptop is about 16 months old, just suddenly turned off and stopped working. Was brought to a computer place who said something about the motherboard - though im not that sure and they said be best to put it in the bin. WTF. Phoned hp and because its out of warranty costing £300 to fix it. Have i any options bar scrapping it and buying new one ?

Why did they think it was the motherboard ?

Does it not even turn on ?

tyrone girl

No it wont even turn on - i think it was motherboard they said - i havnt been home yet to ask them right.

If it won't even turn on tg (and I'm assuming you're turning it on with it plugged in, i.e., not from the batteries, or both plugged in and from the batteries), it's more likely power components, which would not be (that) expensive to repair (I would say).

Does the LEDs light up ?

Do you even hear the fan turning ?

i.e is it completely 'dead' ?

Why though would they have said the motherboard - i must find out more info - could we not put in a claim on house insurance for it and make up something

Perhaps the power components are integrated on the motherboard in your particular laptop, or perhaps they're trying to rip you off?

An electronics shop could repair those power components for a modest amount.

Ok just off the phone - it turned off and then when tried turn it back on it went on for a min then off again - then this morning when they tried it - the light came on just if u held the button on , but it wouldnt turn on at all and no noise or anything of it.

Was my brother thinkin it was motherboard - through looking up the internet or something about them types of hp laptops - and then the computer place said if it was the motherboard better to scap it as too expensive to fix

Just sickening as it isnt that old and hasnt got heavy use

DennistheMenace

You could check to see if your contents policy covers accident damage but I'm assuming this would affect future premiums not to mention you'd probably need to pay an excess so you might have to pay the first say 100 quid of the claim.

It could be the motherboard is dead but get a second opinion from another repair shop.

TG bring it to a repair shop then and tell them the symptons it might not be the MB.

The fan might need clogged up or a simple power issue.

Same thing happened my Dell a few years back.  For a while the power cable was a bit funny and you had to hold it in a certain way for the laptop to charge.  Light would flick off and on.  Then went totally dead.  I thought it was the power cable and had it taken apart but made no difference.  Brought it to another computer shop and the guy said it was the connection ont he motherboard and that it prob wasn't worth fixing as he was quoting 200-300 pound.

On the same laptop I once broke the screen.  I claimed of the contents insurance and only had to pay the 50 pound excess charge to fix it. iw ould recommend this route

Yeh i think we may well try this and see cos the thing isnt even bloody old and sickening to have to fork out over 200 quid to get it fixed  >:(

I had exactly this problem also. The problem is the power components integrated on the motherboard. It might be possible for a back street repair place to fix this type of fault, I may even have a go myself (having borrowed a machine in meantime). Replacing the motherboard is nonsense as it would be more than half the price of whole new laptop.
