Signed myself up for Queen's rugby the other day and gonna head down to the trainin on tuesday night. Was wonderin if anyone on the board and started rugby from scratch coming from a primarily football background. Was it hard to pick up? Would the training be harder than football trainin? I'd imagine alot of the skills transfer over and I've never thought itd be that hard to play with the throwing, catching and kicking aspect of it but itd be alot harder to pick up the tactical side?

The first problem you will have is not being fully conversant on the laws of the game.  We play at school level but our greatest problem is the technical aspects of the game as we are always learning the laws by breaking them!

Yeah still find myself confused sometimes watchin rugby on the tv even though I've watched hundreds of games, would say that confusion will be tenfold when I play!

That's more or less how I feel about the prospect of taking up football, coming mainly from a soccer background.

Best forget all you think you know and start afresh.

You'll make most of your mistakes in training . So I wouldn't worry to much. Sure there a plenty of technicalities but you'll pick these up over time . The basics are simple enough i.e Stay on your feet at the ruck, releasing the ball

Be careful out there, it is very easy to pick up injuries in this sport especially for those starting the game at a late stage with those who have been playing for years.

dont you think the game stops/starts to much? it constantly breaksdown and is like gaa with a bad ref who wont stop blowing. most games are borefests with the odd cracker but would you not play a game that lets you run like gaa or soccer. i have huge respect for rugby players anyone who can stand out in the worst weather possible and do nothing most of the time is one tough cookie  ;)

Care to back this up with some links? I've been playing  major injury free for a 2 years now. I got more playing soccer . If you decide to play at provincial level as a beginner  then you will get hurt. You need to pick the right level , however the right level generally finds you.
