Notebooks - Are they worth it?

Hi all,

I am thinking of replacing my old Inspiron 1500 laptop.  I don't really use its full capabilities as I use it for Internet connection, downloading music, playing music and some spreadsheet work . 

And I'm looking for something lighter.

Would a Noteook fulfill these functions or should I get one of these light laptops?  Can I get a good sound card in a notebook?
