Effects of Endorsement on commitments of players?

All the hard training and all the hard slog but this is the time of the year when the last few teams contest the quest for Sam. A lot of people forget that only one team can win so various excuses and allegations are made against players, county boards and management, or in the case of Cork hurlers, at everyone.  Others try to deflect the criticism through various means (Isn't this the time of year that large man eating black cats the size of pumas and cows are seen roaming around the north?) and some blame the amount of games in succession that they gave to play by coming through the back door.  But, how many teams are effected by high profile players who, if they win certain games are guaranteed huge money by being promoted by outside groups into positions that rake them in so much money that kicking a point is like the pressure of Paul Harrington taking a putt from 5' for 300,000 Eur.

I saw players in the Kerry v Dubs game so not at the races or not concentrating on what they were doing that it looked like their minds were on something else altogether.  I saw players in front of goal doing what a six year old would do, pick the ball off the ground on two occasions when all they had to do was put their toe to it on one hand and on the other hand I wondered if the attempts at the spectacular were made under outside influence?

Endorsements are big issues, one player having earned 800,000 Eur to date, and good luck to him.  But are these new found avenues to fame and fortune having an effect on players in an amateur game to an extent that their focus can be completely somewhere else on the big day?

I doubt it. I'd say their focus on the big day is squarely on 'the big day'.

However, it might have an effect on preparation and lifestyle which would put them on a very different level (mentally) from the majority of the of the athletes throughout the country.

And why couldn't Paul Harrington or Paddy Harrington or Ger Harrington take a 5' putt?

I agree, but I think that there is serious competition out there now between marketing companies, I mean any company that would give the Dubs a million a year ffs?
So then approaches are made by these companies to do certain things during games that will attract sponsorship like for example in a recent game where the goalkeeper made a great issue out of how he place his foot under the cup while placing the ball to kick it out.  Four or five times he made it clear that he was advertising Puma - and just to be clear about it, I am not talking about Cluxton who was a credit to Dublin on Munda.

Bud are you saying one GAA player has earned €800k in endorsements? I would be quiet surprised by that considering Ireland is such a small market place and one GAA player drinking/eating a product would not have the same impact on the consumer as say a national professional sport person.

i think that is an impossible question to answer. there are over 30 teams competing in the chamionship and with that shear volume of people you are always going to get people, as in any walk of life who will be motivated by alternative goals. thats just life. But.........on the whole I dont believe endorsements are talking away from palyers commitment. Perhaps I am being blinkered here but honestly thats my viewpoint.

could endorsements not also be seen in a positive light for palyers to try and get more out of the game?

sorry for asking again but is this €800,000 well documented because I havent heard of it and would like to learn more on it?

The figure I got was "Up to 800,000" so it could be more. You don't earn that swigging out of an energiser bottle.

Like stated above, there are some players that may be motivated more by the few bob they earn and I have no problem with that but when there is a big carrot dangling in front of you to an extent that the county boards head is wanted on a plate or the manager gets sacked for doing a job he is not paid for then there are bigger issues on thbe field than a big leather ball.

What a silly hypothesis. Is there any evidence that it does?

By the way, in my experience managers are usually sack for not doing the job they were mandated to do, paid or not.

I also heard about the €800,000 but not a Gaelic Football player.

This 800,000, has it been made from endorsing products?

These are famous last words. Can we stop with the gossip? If anyone can back up these claims with direct quotes then do it. Otherwise, leave it be as it doesn't do anyone any good.
